Lab Technician - Psychology Department

Virginia Military Institute is looking for a part‑time Laboratory Technician to support lab classes, statistics courses, and research methods courses. The position reports to the Department Head and assists with scheduling and preparing lab activities, troubleshooting equipment, maintaining supplies, and providing instructional support to students and faculty.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance and troubleshoot hardware and software problems.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and keep the laboratory area organized and clean.
  • Assist with the development of laboratory policies, procedures, and methods.
  • Prepare lab materials, sample charts, graphs, and reports from data.
  • Provide computing assistance with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SPSS, and Outlook.
  • Train students and others in lab procedures.
  • Attend lab, statistics, and research methods classes as needed.
  • Hold office hours to assist students with statistics and research related assignments and questions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to coordinate the details of an experiment and anticipate and solve technical problems.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and initiative.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and listening).
  • Ability to work well with others as part of a team.
  • Ability to work independently on projects.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent formal training in Psychology or related field.
Additional Considerations
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent formal training in Psychology or related field.
  • Experience conducting research in social sciences.
  • Ability to set up and maintain a database, assist with data analysis using SPSS, data scoring and reduction, and familiarity with computer programming software such as Qualtrics, PEBL, e‑prime, etc., or the ability to learn new software relevant to lab and research activities.
