Job Description

Special Education Paraprofessional
Paraprofessionals assist teachers by performing a variety of tasks relating to the physical and instructional needs of students in a classroom setting.

Depending on the classroom and/or building assignment, the Special Education Paraprofessional may support children with various degrees of special needs. This is a 10‑month position (August through May) with an opportunity to work summer school in June. Paraprofessionals are eligible for the benefits listed below. Anticipated start date:
August 20, 2026.

Pay

Special Education Paraprofessional: $16.76 – $21.03 per hour (based on relevant work experience).
Severe Needs Paraprofessional: $17.24 – $21.63 per hour (based on relevant work experience).

Schedule
  • Monday through Friday
  • Start and end time varies based on assigned school
Job Duties
  • Assist students with basic academics (reading, language and/or math).
  • Follow individual health plans (e.g., seizure activity, blood‑sugar monitoring).
  • Assist with personal care of students if needed (e.g., bathroom, eating).
  • Attend to student’s health needs and follow individual health plans (e.g., seizure activity, blood‑sugar monitoring, tube feeding, colostomy bags) as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Assist in implementation of instructional programs, including self‑help and behavior.
  • Provide sensory interventions under the guidance of therapists and teachers to keep students calm and ready to learn.
Requirements
  • Criminal‑justice fingerprint/background clearance.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate’s degree preferred.
  • DESE approved paraprofessional test, or 60 college credit hours, or completed a 20‑hour substitute certificate course.
