Job Overview
Assists in directing area office operations and manages employees involved in construction, design, maintenance, survey, laboratory activities, and office tasks. Reports to the Area Engineer, who has full authority for approval of all work. When the Area Engineer is absent, responsible for the operations of the area office. Works with governmental officials and private entities, establishes independent work plans and priorities, and handles issues at occurrence.
EssentialDuties
- Assists the Area Engineer in projecting personnel and equipment needed for each project and responds to emergency situations as required.
- Conducts pre‑construction, employee forum, and safety meetings.
- Determines quantities and estimates costs.
- Inspects roads, monitors maintenance activities, and coordinates maintenance work with construction projects.
- Monitors traffic control plans.
- Oversees right‑of‑way, design, and/or plan preparation for the area office.
- Plans and schedules work of construction personnel and provides on‑job training.
- Prepares and/or reviews monthly and final estimates and construction reports.
- Resolves public complaints.
- Works with governmental officials on behalf of the Area Engineer.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Education
:
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science. A higher degree accepted by TX PELS. - Experience
: 4 years of transportation engineering experience, or equivalent part‑time experience. Related graduate level education may substitute experience on a one‑year‑per‑year basis. - Licenses and Certifications
:
Valid driver’s license; position requires operation of a state vehicle. Licensed Professional Engineer required. Engineers licensed in another U.S. state must obtain Texas license within six months of hire and sign required agreement.
- Preparation, review, processing, and compliance of plans, specifications, and estimates.
- Application of industry inspection methods and procedures.
- Knowledge of construction engineering policies and procedures.
- Use of engineering workstations and applications for planning and design.
- Execution of testing methods, processes, and procedures.
- Application of engineering principles and practices to job responsibilities.
- Public relations and maintenance of effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Analysis and organization of business and technical data.
- Proficiency with computers, relevant programs, and systems.
- Logical reasoning to define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make decisions that support business objectives.
- Sedentary work:
Lift up to 10 lbs at a time; occasional carrying of files or small tools. - Light work:
Lift up to 20 lbs at a time; frequent lifting or carrying of objects up to 10 lbs. - Standing for prolonged periods.
- Repetitive motion with substantial wrist, hand, or finger movements.
- Close visual acuity required for data, figures, computer screen use, and extensive reading.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. Medical marijuana is not a valid medical explanation under the applicable regulation.
