DESCRIPTION
:
To assist instructional staff in providing a well‑organized, smoothly functioning learning environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program.
QUALIFICATIONS
:
- Certification:
Valid Illinois Professional Educator’s, Paraprofessional, or Substitute License registered in Lake County - Education:
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 60 credit hours of college credit - Experience:
Preferred – classroom experience, Spanish‑speaking
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
:
- Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by staff.
- Assists staff in devising and implementing special strategies based on the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
- Implements behavioral strategies for individual students and assists with students in crisis.
- Accompanies students to special, mainstreaming, and/or exploratory classes to facilitate full participation per the student’s IEP.
- Administers, scores, and records achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by staff.
- Assists with equipment, technology, and augmentative communication devices used as listed on IEP or directed by staff.
- Assists students with completing instructional assignments; distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other instructional materials; corrects papers; supervises testing and makeup work; guides enrichment and remedial work assigned by staff.
- Checks and records student attendance; assists in data collection and recording of student performance as requested.
- Supervises students throughout the school day, including during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, transitions, lunch/recess, field trips, and community outings.
- Assists students with daily living skills such as dressing, undressing, lunch, snack, clean‑up routines, toileting, washing, and using assistive equipment.
- Alerts staff to any problem or special information regarding a student.
- Maintains high ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information; functions as a mandated reporter.
- Assists with student movement throughout the day as directed by special education staff and/or administration.
- Paraprofessionals are non‑teaching personnel who may be used for non‑teaching duties not requiring instructional judgment or evaluation of pupils, for supervising study halls, long‑distance teaching reception areas, detention and discipline areas, for academic programs under a certificated teacher’s supervision, and for specialized instruction in qualified fields.
- May be temporarily or permanently reassigned based on student or school needs.
- Performs other tasks and assumes responsibilities as assigned by staff, principal, supervisor, director or other administrator.
