About This Opportunity
As our Vehicle Mechanic
, you’ll ensure the safe, reliable operation of agency vehicles and equipment through skilled maintenance, diagnostics, and repair. Working within our Transportation Department, this role plays a critical part in maintaining transportation readiness, regulatory compliance, and overall safety for participants, staff, and the public.
Your work directly supports dependable daily operations and mission-driven programming across the organization.
What you'll accomplish:Perform maintenance, service, and repairs on agency vans, trucks, and fleet vehicles to ensure safe and reliable operation
Diagnose and troubleshoot gas and diesel-powered engines, including brake, transmission, electrical, cooling, heating, and drivetrain systems
Complete preventive maintenance and scheduled servicing in accordance with manufacturer standards and agency requirements
Maintain vehicles in inspection‑ready and regulatory‑compliant condition, including support for IDOT and monthly inspections
Accurately complete repair work orders, service logs, fuel records, and parts inventory documentation
Track parts usage and maintain organized inventory records
Coordinate with the Transportation Manager regarding repair timelines, outside service estimates, and unexpected expenses
Respond to emergency vehicle issues, weather‑related events, and after‑hours needs as required
Support special event transportation operations as needed
You bring technical expertise, strong diagnostic skills, and a commitment to safety. You take pride in keeping vehicles dependable and compliant while maintaining clear documentation and communication. Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent required
Trade school certification, technical training, or automotive/diesel apprenticeship preferred
Experience repairing and maintaining vans, trucks, and fleet vehicles
Experience working with gas and diesel-powered engines and equipment
Strong diagnostic ability across mechanical, electrical, brake, transmission, cooling, and drivetrain systems
Experience maintaining repair logs, service documentation, and parts inventory records
Ability to work independently and respond effectively to urgent mechanical issues
Valid driver’s license with safe driving record
Ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds using proper techniques
Willingness to work occasional evenings, early mornings, weekends, or extended hours during emergencies or special events

Compensation
Starting pay is $25.00 per hour
