- The Fleet Manager directly supports the academic achievement of students in Lincolnshire-Prairie View School District 103 by ensuring that a safe, reliable, technically sound, and fiscally responsible Fleet Maintenance program is instituted and maintained for the school bus and non-school bus fleet. Manages the entire transportation fleet for D103, and is responsible for maintenance of the fleet, fuel, acquisitions, input on contracts, record keeping and fleet services operations.
Additionally, the Fleet Manager is responsible for the creation of and maintaining a safe and financially sound Preventive Maintenance Program. The incumbent manages all fleet personnel. - Work hours vary from 6:00 a.m.
- 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position is subject to being on call.
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Experience in gas, diesel, and/or electric school buses preferred or public sector shop with a fleet of more than 20 vehicles preferred.
- Current, clear, and valid Commercial Driver's License. Class B with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) – required. District willing to train.
- Currently possess and maintain or ability to obtain an Illinois School Bus Permit - required. District willing to train.
- Ability to perform mechanical work on mid-range diesel-powered vehicles, electric school buses, heavy-duty gasoline vehicles, pickups, cars, light duty equipment, and related systems
- 2+ years formal work experience performing basic automotive maintenance.
- Knowledge of procedures and techniques used in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of equipment and vehicles
- Ability to operate pallet jack and pallet lift
- Skill in operating motorized equipment and various hand, pneumatic and power tools
- ASE Certifications, a plus
- Cummins ISB/ISC Certification, a plus
- MVI License, a plus
- Must be able to provide own hand tools
- Knowledge of management and supervisory concepts.
- Knowledge and principles and practices of fleet management.
- High degree of technical skills with school bus, gas, heavy diesel, electric, automotive and motorized equipment.
- Knowledge of vehicle warranty programs.
- Knowledge of budget practices.
- Knowledge of vehicle/equipment specifications and applications.
- Ability to read and interpret complex materials such as technical manuals, schematics and written diagrams.
- Excellent organizational, oral and written communications of complex materials.
- Understanding of procurement processes related to parts, fuel, lubricants, and oil.
- Skilled in Microsoft Office programs, Telematics GPS data, various diagnostic software and other technology applications.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage priorities and workloads.
- Knowledge of the bid process
- Oversee fleet maintenance, supervise required inspections of school buses; perform routine maintenance safety checks and inspections of vehicles; maintain accurate service and repair history records on transportation vehicles and equipment; monitor and update DMV registrations.
- Create and maintain safe and financially sound Preventative Maintenance Program
- Prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports and files related to assigned activities and personnel; maintain mileage, repair and labor costs performed on District vehicles.
- Respond to emergency field calls as needed.
- Perform assigned repairs, maintenance and installation of equipment on transportation vehicles.
- Ensures that all vehicles are safe for students and can pass required state inspections.
- Communicates with the Director of Transportation and specific bus drivers in regards to day-to-day condition of the transportation fleet.
- Communicate and coordinate required work with repair facilities.
Ability to work well with others including transportation / grounds staff. - Perform preventative maintenance checks, automatic transmission services, and brake work.
- Utilize Fleetvision or Servicefinder, Google Docs, and District email, Zonar, Seon (or similar) Bus Camera Systems
- Ability to safely lift 50+ pounds without injuring yourself.
- Ability to help diagnose and troubleshoot issues with buses.
- Keep informed regarding changes in equipment and maintenance techniques through reading and participating in meetings, seminars, conferences, and available training.
- Keep District owned shop equipment in good working condition.
- Ensures that all vehicles meet or exceed Federal and State Safety Standards.
- In the event of an emergency, expected to stay and help where needed.
- Performs other tasks and assumes other such responsibilities that may be assigned by the Director of Transportation.
