Role Description

The Controller is a full-time, on-site role based in Lihue, HI, responsible for overseeing the organization’s financial operations and ensuring accurate, timely reporting. Day-to-day duties include managing the general ledger, supervising accounts payable and accounts receivable, preparing financial statements, and monitoring cash flow. The Controller develops and maintains internal controls, supports budgeting and forecasting, and ensures compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulations, and funding requirements.

This role collaborates with leadership to provide financial analysis, supports audit activities, and recommends process improvements to enhance efficiency and financial stewardship. The Controller also leads and mentors accounting staff, promotes best practices, and contributes to strategic decision-making through clear, data-driven insights.

Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls, with proven experience managing general ledger and month-end close processes.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis to support organizational planning and decision-making.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and ERP systems, as well as solid skills in spreadsheet and financial modeling tools.
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance, audit processes, and, ideally, nonprofit or healthcare finance requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including supervising accounting staff, delegating tasks, and fostering a collaborative, inclusive environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent professional certification is preferred.
  • Experience as a Controller, Finance Manager, or Senior Accountant in a complex organization; familiarity with grant or fund accounting is an asset.
