Highway Construction Inspector (I‑IV)
Position available for the Kauai District Office in the Department of Transportation – Highways, State of Hawaii.
Duties Summary- Highway Construction Inspector I: Inspects a particular phase of highway construction to determine conformance with plans, specifications, contracts, agreements, and standard methods of work; performs related duties as assigned.
- Highway Construction Inspector II: Inspects various phases of highway construction to verify conformance with plans and specifications, resolves problems using precedents or instructions, and refers issues beyond scope to supervisors.
- Highway Construction Inspector III: Independently inspects all phases of highway construction and related structures for conformance with plans, specifications, contracts, agreements, and standard methods of work.
- Highway Construction Inspector IV: Supervises and participates in inspections of all phases of highway construction; independently inspects a wide variety of highway projects; may train and supervise lower-level inspectors; performs related duties as assigned.
- Legal Authorization to Work: Citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
- Basic Education/
Experience:
High‑school graduation or equivalent; experience demonstrating knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, and ability to read and understand oral and written instructions. - General
Experience:
One year of work experience in one or a combination of:- Journey‑level experience in a construction trade, requiring ability to read and interpret blue‑prints or plans.
- Progressively responsible experience performing technical, non‑professional engineering tasks under general supervision, including inspectional work comparable to the State of Hawaii Engineering Aid III level.
- Specialized Experience (levels II‑IV): Progressive responsibility in the inspection of phases of highway construction to determine conformance with plans, specifications, contracts, agreements, and methods of work:
- Level II: 1 year
- Level III: 2 years
- Level IV: 3 years
- Driver's License: Valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii at the time of appointment.
