Full time, tenure track, 9-month, general funded position, to begin approximately Spring 2026, pending position clearance, availability of funds, and actual staffing requirements. Renewal of appointment contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Position may be converted from 9 to 11 months or 11 to 9 months based on operational needs. Please note this is a continuous recruitment and may be filled at anytime.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Under general supervision, teach introductory and intermediate transfer-level courses in Hawaiian language for Kaua`i Community College students. These courses may include, but are not limited to, instruction in introductory and intermediate-level `Olelo Hawai`i (speaking, reading, and composition) and college-level `Olelo Hawai`i literature courses. Day, evening, weekend, on- and off-campus, and/or distance education classes may be assigned as part of the regular workload.

    Early College `Olelo Hawai`i courses offered at different high school campuses on the island of Kaua`i may also be included as part of or the majority of the position's workload. Changes to modalities and approaches in teaching assignments may be needed to address emerging needs.
  • Identify students' learning needs, and implement effective teaching strategies to address them.
  • Independently plan, organize, and carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
  • Revise or create new curricula and student learning outcomes when necessary, and regularly revise course syllabi in accordance with campus policies.
  • Perform regular course assessments and participate in ongoing discipline-, program-, and institutional-level assessment.
  • Implement adjustments to course content and professional practice to improve student learning in classes taught.
  • Participate in discipline-, division-, campus-, and system-wide committees, as well as relevant partnership initiatives between Kaua'i Community College/University of Hawai`i and the Hawai`i Department of Education.
  • Maintain appropriate office hours for each course taught.
  • Work collaboratively with other Kaua`i Community College faculty and staff.
  • Develop and maintain a personal professional development program.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Kaua`i Community College's mission, principles, and philosophy.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following: a) Master's in Hawaiian language or literature; or b) Master's in Hawaiian as a Second Language; or c) Master's in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian; or d) Master's in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language with at least twelve (12) credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof;

or e) Bachelor's in Hawaiian language or literature with three (3) years of related work experience; or f) Bachelor's in Hawaiian as a Second Language with three (3) years of related work experience; or g) Bachelor's in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian with three (3) years of related work experience; or h) Bachelor's in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language with at least twelve (12) credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof, and three (3) years of related work experience.

All minimum qualifications must be from an accredited institution and met by the effective date of appointment. If qualified applicants are not available, others may be considered on an Acting Instructor basis.

Desirable

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Hawaiian Language and/or Hawaiian Studies.
  • One to three (1-3) years of successful experience teaching introductory and intermediate level `Olelo Hawai`i courses.
  • One to three (1-3) years of successful experience teaching `Olelo Hawai`i and/or Hawaiian Studies courses at an accredited community college or university.
  • Successful multicultural teaching experience, especially in Hawai`i and/or Pacific island regions.
  • Knowledge of and experience in Kanaka Maoli culture and language.
  • Ability and willingness to teach 100- and 200-level Hawaiian Studies courses.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Ho'okele (non-instrument oceanic way finding).
  • Knowledge of and experience with Kanaka Maoli sustainability practices (Malama ka?Aina).
  • Ability to use writing and critical thinking as integral parts of students' learning activities.
