PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN (ENTRY LEVEL & FULL PERFORMANCE) – State of Hawaiʻi

This position works in the psychiatric unit of an acute care hospital which provides acute adult and adolescent psychiatric services. The position serves as part of the treatment team and is involved in planning, organizing, and conducting adjunctive services (recreational and diversional activities) which involves the implementation of moderately complex therapeutic procedures and the application of various techniques in patient care services.

The position also provides a variety of personal care and nursing services to patients in the unit. The position may be required to work on shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

• Orientation and Companionship: orient patients to the hospital setting, rules and regulations, patient rights and treatment team system; serve as a companion for newly admitted patients to establish rapport and facilitate a social network with other patients on the unit.
• Assessment and Planning: take vital signs and measurements; monitor seclusion/restraint status; record observations; report findings to the charge nurse; participate in treatment team to formulate master treatment plans; assist in planning therapeutic interventions; participate in daily community meetings with the team to set goals.
• Implementation and Evaluation: train patients in activities of daily living; provide adjunctive services planned by RN/Recreational Therapist/Occupational Therapist; maintain a safe milieu; monitor contraband and enforce unit rules; evaluate crisis intervention effectiveness with the team; assist in evaluating patient progress.
• Other Duties: may admit, transfer, or discharge patients; assist in emergency procedures; transport/escort patients; provide physical care; attend in-service training; may work on another unit; complete mandatory training and maintain CPR certification; participate in QA and infection control; participate in research surveys; perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Education and experience requirements may not be gained concurrently. Qualifying work experience is credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

• Entry Level: One (1) year of work experience in a hospital or medically oriented setting with observation and reporting of physical/mental symptoms, basic nursing skills, patient rights, infection control, body mechanics, medical terminology, and ability to read/write English; ability to learn and apply basic behavioral and psychiatric principles; establish therapeutic relationships; follow directions; keep records; analyze situations; and take action.
• Full Performance Level: One (1) year of work experience in a mental health facility/unit performing therapeutic activities under supervision; knowledge of behavioral characteristics of mental health problems; psychiatric procedures; de-escalation techniques; side effects of psychiatric medications; ability to assist in treatment team activities; independently provide adjunctive services to a caseload of psychiatric patients.
