Summary
Transportation Security Officers provide security and protection of travelers across all transportation sectors in a courteous and professional manner. Duties may extend to securing high‑profile events and important figures.
Duties- Operate various screening equipment and technologies to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo and on passengers and prevent those objects from being transported onto aircraft.
- Perform searches and screening, which may include physical interaction with passengers (e.g., pat‑downs, search of property, etc.), conduct bag searches and lift or carry bags, bins and property weighing up to 50lbs.
- Control terminal entry and exit points.
- Interact with the public, give directions and respond to inquiries.
- Maintain focus and awareness while working in a stressful environment, preserving professional ability to identify and locate potentially life‑threatening devices and make effective decisions in both crisis and routine situations.
- Engage in continuous development of critical thinking skills, necessary to mitigate actual and potential security threats, by identifying, evaluating and applying appropriate situational options and approaches.
- Retain and implement knowledge of all applicable Standard Operating Procedures, demonstrating responsible and dependable behavior and adapting to new information or unexpected obstacles.
The salary range for this location is $61,920 to $77,366 (or $29.67 to $37.07 per hour), including locality pay of 22.21 % and COLA pay of 8.64 %, plus a retention incentive of 20 % of adjusted pay that is unique to this duty location. The incentive is contingent upon annual approval and funding.

Physical Demands- Maintain physical agility to ensure ability to squat and bend.
- Repeatedly lift and manipulate baggage, containers weighing approximately 50 pounds.
- Walk up to three (3) miles during a shift and stand for prolonged periods (up to 4 hours) of time.
To qualify for the SV‑D pay band (GS‑5/6) you must meet one of the following:
- Experience:
at least one year of full‑time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening or as an X‑ray technician. - Education:
high‑school diploma, GED, HiSET or TASC certificate.
Credit for experience is given based on a 40‑hour workweek; part‑time experience is credited proportionally.
Additional Requirements- Occasional travel: up to six weeks of travel for training.
- Selective Service registration verification for male applicants born after 12/31/59.
- Credit check: no delinquent federal or state taxes, or past‑due child support.
- Residency: must have resided within the United States for three of the last five years immediately prior to applying.
- Re‑employed annuitants: salary may be reduced by the amount of pension for former federal or postal service employees receiving a civilian retirement annuity.
