Summary of Position

The Dialysis Technician provides support to residents receiving dialysis services in a long-term care setting. The position assists with the safe preparation, delivery, monitoring, and completion of dialysis treatments under the direction and supervision of qualified licensed nursing personnel, dialysis professionals, and/or the contracted dialysis provider, as applicable. The Dialysis Technician maintains a safe, clean, and supportive environment while promoting resident dignity, comfort, and quality of care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with preparing the dialysis treatment area, equipment, supplies, and resident according to established procedures.
  • Assist with dialysis equipment setup, operation, cleaning, disinfection, and maintenance within the scope of training and applicable regulations.
  • Assist licensed personnel and dialysis professionals with dialysis treatments as directed.
  • Monitor residents during treatment and promptly report changes in condition, complaints, abnormal observations, or potential complications to the appropriate licensed professional.
  • Obtain and document vital signs and other observations as assigned and permitted by applicable regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation related to dialysis treatments and resident care.
  • Follow infection prevention and control practices, including appropriate hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain appropriate cleanliness and organization of dialysis equipment and treatment areas.
  • Follow facility, dialysis-provider, manufacturer, OSHA, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with positioning, transferring, transporting, and providing comfort measures to residents as directed.
  • Observe residents for signs of discomfort, distress, bleeding, changes in mental status, or other changes requiring immediate attention.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing staff, residents, families, physicians, dialysis providers, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Protect resident privacy and confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow facility emergency procedures.
  • Maintain required certifications, training, competencies, and continuing education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical and Sensory Requirements
  • Standing/Walking:
    Frequently stand and walk throughout the facility and dialysis treatment area.
  • Sitting:
    Occasionally sit while completing documentation, monitoring residents, or performing administrative duties.
  • Lifting/Carrying:
    Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and supplies weighing up to approximately 25 pounds. May occasionally assist with heavier loads using appropriate equipment and additional staff.
  • Resident Assistance:
    May assist with repositioning, transferring, transporting, and supporting residents, using mechanical lifts and other assistive devices as required by the resident's care plan and facility policy.
  • Pushing/Pulling:
    Frequently push and pull wheelchairs, stretchers, dialysis equipment, supply carts, and other equipment.
  • Bending/Squatting/Kneeling:
    Frequently bend, stoop, squat, kneel, and reach while providing resident care and handling equipment and supplies.
  • Reaching:
    Frequently reach forward and overhead to obtain supplies, operate equipment, and provide resident care.
  • Hand Use:
    Frequently use hands and fingers for equipment operation, documentation, handling supplies, and performing tasks requiring fine motor coordination.
  • Vision:
    Must have sufficient visual ability to observe residents, read medical records and equipment displays, identify labels, and recognize changes in resident condition.
  • Hearing:
    Must have sufficient hearing to communicate with residents and staff and respond to alarms and emergency situations.
  • Communication:
    Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in person and by telephone.
  • Environmental Exposure:
    May be exposed to blood, bodily fluids, infectious materials, cleaning chemicals, and other healthcare-related hazards. Appropriate PPE must be used.
  • Emergency Response:
    Must be able to respond promptly to resident emergencies and summon appropriate assistance.
Physical Demand Level

Moderate to Heavy Physical Demand. The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and handling of equipment and supplies, with occasional physical assistance of residents using appropriate lifting equipment and established safe-handling procedures.

Work Environment

The position is primarily performed in a long-term care facility and designated dialysis treatment areas. The employee may work around residents with varying levels of mobility, cognitive ability, and medical complexity.
