Psychiatric Attendant

Provide on-ward security functions over forensic patients or residents of secure-care areas. Provide on-ward surveillance regarding safety and security. Escort patients to and from off-ward activities or appointments such as meals, dental visits, laboratory procedures, work details, and recreational or therapeutic activities. Investigate instances of patient misbehavior. Observe and monitor patient behavior, especially during meals. Intervene during crisis situations to prevent self-injury or injury to others.

Apply restraints or assist nursing staff in calming or secluding violent patients. Monitor patients in seclusion. Search patient clothing, individual rooms, and ward living areas for dangerous objects and contraband. Prevent patient escapes. Provide direct care and treatment to forensic patients and promote activities on and off ward. Attend to personal hygiene and grooming needs, monitoring and instructing treatment plan programs.

Encourage independent functioning among patients. Monitor and assist patients in washing clothes. Conduct one-on-one sessions with patients to discuss problems or concerns. Provide adequate clothing for patients. Serve meal trays. Assist in administering treatments as directed by nursing staff. Prepare patients for psychiatric or medical treatment. Bath patients who are unable to perform personal care. Lead recreational activities for patients.

Assist coworkers in maintaining sanitary living conditions by performing general housekeeping duties. Prepare reports and documentation regarding patient and unit activities. Document significant or unusual patient behavior in progress notes. Complete necessary log entries and reports. Attend in-service training programs and interdisciplinary team meetings. Respond to patient needs in emergency situations. Be prepared for exposure to unpredictable patient behavior. Work shifts that may include weekends and holidays.

High school diploma or G.E.D. Professional level CPR certification
