The Registered Nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for the care of assigned patients on his/her assigned shift. The RN is responsible for assessment data collection and providing a clinical basis for the development of an individualized plan of care across the peri-anesthesia continuum. The plan of care is based on initial and ongoing assessments and guides the nurse to intervene to meet the patient's goals.
The RN participates in the formulation of a multidisciplinary treatment plan and implementation of collaborative therapeutic interventions. The RN evaluates the patient's health status and determines the effectiveness of the interventions. The RN role during the pre-anesthesia phase focuses on assessing the patient, assisting with nerve blocks, and developing a plan of care to meet the per-anesthesia physical, psychological, educational, sociocultural, and spiritual needs of the patient, family, and significant others.
Under the direct supervision of the Anesthesiologist, the RN communicates on the continuum of care. Interviewing and assessments are performed to identify potential or actual problems and are reported to anesthesia. The post-anesthesia Phase I is performed by the RN during the immediate post-anesthesia period, transitioning patients to the Phase II level of care.
