Description:
Provides professional nursing care to patients hospitalized in health services units, or to individuals housed in state-owned or operated facilities. Observes, assesses, and records symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients. Makes nursing rounds and takes and records vital signs. Prepares and administers prescribed medications and treatment plans. Monitors patients requiring restraint on a timely basis. Provides immediate medical attention to emergencies, such as administering first aid or arranging transportation when necessary.
Counsels patients regarding the need for medical referrals. May schedule, assign, and review work of lower-level staff if assigned. Participates in staff development and education. Reviews care plans written by staff and trains or orients new employees. Responsible for all health care of patients, including evaluating care needs and rendering services. Performs specialized procedures such as IV therapy, wound care, oxygen therapy, and dialysis.
Organizes and oversees emergency response teams. Acts as lead worker in charge of the assigned shift in the absence of a supervisory nurse. Assists in giving diagnostic health evaluations. Performs clerical tasks such as documenting medications and treatments. Completes required reports and maintains inventory of controlled substances. Arranges out-patient clinic appointments and medical examinations. Performs administrative tasks and serves as a liaison within the organization.
May conduct and attend meetings and serve as an instructor on occasion. Serves as a member or leader of problem-solving teams or groups. Knowledge of professional registered nursing procedures and regulations is essential. Skill in operating medical equipment is required. Ability to manage concrete variables and demonstrate physical fitness is important.
