The Center for People is a dynamic non-profit organization that provides innovative services and programs to the low-income community in Lincoln, Nebraska, addressing basic needs and providing opportunities to achieve economic independence for our clients.

We are currently looking for a Receptionist Specialist. This position is a full-time, 40 hour per week, onsite position.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS

The Front Desk & Pantry Receptionist serves as the welcoming face of the Center for People, providing excellent customer service to all visitors, participants, and community partners. This position is responsible for greeting and assisting individuals at the front desk and during pantry operations, scanning and enrolling participants into programs, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring a warm, safe, and professional environment throughout public-facing areas.

ESSENTIAL

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide a welcoming and professional first impression to all guests, participants, volunteers, and community partners entering the Center.
  • Assist participants with pantry check-in, including scanning Clarity cards, verifying eligibility, updating participant records, and issuing new cards as needed.
  • Create or update participant profiles in the Clarity database and ensure that all required documentation is scanned, uploaded, and stored accurately.
  • Maintain situational awareness of both the front lobby and pantry areas, ensuring they are clean, organized, and safe for staff and participants.
  • Answer and route phone calls, respond to general inquiries, and provide accurate information about Center for People programs and services.
  • Support flow and organization of shoppers, helping manage lines, direct traffic, and provide customer service that ensures fairness and confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with staff and volunteers to create a positive, trauma-informed, and inclusive environment reflective of the Center’s mission and values.
  • Support general administrative needs including data entry, document scanning, inventory tracking, and volunteer coordination as directed.
  • Monitor and report maintenance or safety issues promptly through MaintainX or other assigned systems.
  • Assist with occasional events, community drives, or surveys to help measure program impact and participant experience within and outside of normal working hours.
  • Uphold confidentiality and organizational policies at all times, demonstrating professionalism and respect in all interactions.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and assist in other areas of the organization as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with diverse populations.
  • High empathy and strong customer service mindset.
  • Ability to multitask and remain organized in a busy, people-centered environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and the ability to learn Clarity and other organizational software.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive situations.
  • Adaptability, dependability, and willingness to assist where needed to support the team and mission.
DESIRABLE TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
  • Prior experience in customer service, reception, or administrative support.
  • Experience working with the public or in a nonprofit or human services environment preferred.
  • Bilingual or multilingual communication skills are highly valued.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to use or learn computer systems, including data entry and adaptive technologies.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT
  • Primarily indoor work in an office and pantry environment.
  • Regularly required to talk, hear, sit, stand, and walk; may occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequent use of computer, phone, and office equipment.
  • Flexibility to assist with special events or extended hours as needed.
