Heavy Equipment Operator, Road Construction
Job Summary
Directly supervise and coordinate activities of assigned field employees in heavy highway construction grading environments. Provide leadership and oversight, ensuring safety, scheduling, workforce planning, supervision, and cost control. Adhere to company safety programs and policies. Reliable attendance is required, and work may involve overnight stays away from home for extended periods.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Responsible and accountable for the safety of assigned crew members.
- Oversee and coordinate the activities of field employees while assessing competency and needs of the crew.
- Monitor work and ensure it meets project plans and specifications.
- Oversee, operate, and monitor maintenance of equipment related to moving dirt, including excavators, loaders, dozers, and motor graders.
- Set up and operate stringless grading GPS or UTS systems.
- Identify schedule deficiencies and communicate these to the appropriate people.
- Read grade stakes and use grade hubs for sub‑grade preparation.
- Communicate with appropriate people about any needs, concerns, etc.
- Assist in accident investigation.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Three years of previous heavy highway construction experience, OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Previous asphalt and concrete paving experience preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations- Valid driver’s license. Must be insurable.
- Must be able to secure equipment, load and unload equipment, and clean equipment.
- Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and accurately obtain necessary information from related source documents/data such as design plans and specifications, and other reference materials.
- Knowledge of project construction scope and objectives.
- Working knowledge of types of equipment necessary for production—trimmers, motor grader, etc.
- Familiarity with NDOR and City of Lincoln specifications for sub‑grade preparation, foundation course and fine grading.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Bilingual in English & Spanish is preferred, but not necessary.

Candidate is required to meet the above qualifications, task frequency and PPE requirements. Approval of pre‑employment reference and background checks, and post‑offer drug/alcohol testing with back screens (if required), are required as conditions of employment.
