Special Education Building Paraprofessional 6.75 Hours

Working under supervision of the classroom teacher and other special education professionals. Carries out the educational programs developed by the special education teacher. Assists with special education students as requested by the building administrator.
CompensationStarts at $15.50/hour or $16.50/hour for self‑contained positions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Classroom Management and Instruction
- Assist with classroom management and instruction.
- Provide attention, direction, and assistance to students when appropriate.
- Communicate regularly with the teacher regarding daily plans and observations.
- Tutor individuals.
- Work in small groups.
- Implement teacher‑planned activities for individuals and small groups.
- Encourage appropriate behavior.
- Assist in implementation of the students' behavior management program.
- Observe, record, and chart academic and behavioral progress.
- Accompany and/or assist mainstreamed students in regular classrooms.
- Serve as resource person for the substitute upon teacher absence.
- Work with general education and other special education students when requested, avoiding arbitrary movement outside of assignments.
- Assist with students outside the classroom
- Supervise students during free time, in corridors, lavatories, lunchroom, playground, etc. and then the general population.
- Help with field trips, school parties, and club activities.
- Escort students to various locations in the building.
- Meet, load, and unload buses.
- Help evacuate students during fire drills.
- Assist in classroom housekeeping
- Collect money and keep records.
- Set up rooms for conferences.
- Pass out paper and supplies.
- Assist in setup, operation, and maintenance of equipment.
- Care for lights, window shades, and room temperature.
- Maintain an orderly and neat classroom environment.
- Assist with clerical duties
- Prepare data for reporting to parents.
- Copy information on school records.
- Correct students' work for teacher evaluation.
- Keep files of students' work.
- Prepare classroom material as chosen by teachers.
- Make charts, bulletin boards, and other visual materials.
- Prepare student lists.
- Assist with physical needs of students
- Toilet and diaper students aged 3–21.
- Assist with dressing for swimming and other activities.
- Assist with lifting and positioning of students.
- Feed students at lunch according to prescriptive feeding programs.
- Participate in specialized programs
- Signing programs and other specialized programming as required.
- Communication systems such as signing and PEC's.
- Sensory motor programs.
- Work‑related activities.
- Assume any other job‑related duties delegated by building administration/special education supervisors. May be adjusted as needed.
Some specialized training may be required to meet the needs of the students. If additional training is required to assist special education students it will be at no cost to the employee.
Education and TrainingMinimum High School Diploma
Qualifications- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
