Position: Camp Compass Program Leader Gr K-5 – Summer 2026

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides after school enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. After school clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program Description

During summer, MSCR offers the Camp Compass childcare program across five locations. This camp offers 8 weeks of a fun, enriching and inclusive experience to participants in grades K-5. Each day will include free play, staff‑led activities, outdoor recess and meals. Field trips and special events will be included weekly, when possible. Camp Compass is open to the public for registration.

The CC programs run from 7:30am‑5:30pm and includes breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack.

Job Description & Duties Camp Compass Snapshot
  • Each CC site provides programming for approximately 60 students in grades K‑5.
  • Classrooms typically have 15‑18 students that are supervised by two or more Program Leaders.
  • Each site has a leadership team that consists of one Director and two Assistant Directors.
  • Program Leaders begin their shift checking in with their supervisor and preparing for the day. The majority of the time is spent supervising a group of participants. Once students leave for the day, Program Leaders clean‑up and check in with their supervisor as needed. There is typically one staff meeting per week.
  • Sites swim 1‑2 times a week. Staff are required to swim with participants.
General Responsibilities
  • Attend training week.
  • Plan, prepare for and lead recreation and enrichment activities for elementary‑aged children at school sites.
  • Supervise daily indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Keep students safe by creating a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.
  • Work as a team with other program staff to carry out responsibilities.
  • Maintain a clean and organized classroom and site.
  • Interact with parents as needed.
  • Supervise group during off‑site field trips, including swim lessons.
  • End of day cleanup.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Training
  • Friday, June 12, at assigned school site – 9:00am‑5:30pm (times may vary).
  • Monday through Thursday, June 15‑18, off Friday, June 19. Training locations will vary but will typically be on site. One day of training will include a swimming training session. from 9:00am‑5:30pm (times may vary).
Program Dates

June 22‑August 14, no program/staff June 19, July 3 (unpaid holiday closure).

Hours and Pay
  • Hours a Week:
    Up to 40 hours a week.
  • Work Hours:

    Employees work an 8.5‑hour shift between 7:30am and 5:45pm. This includes a 30‑minute unpaid lunch. There is typically an early shift (7:30am‑4:00pm), mid shift (8:15am‑4:45pm) and closing shift (9:15am‑5:45pm).
  • Pay Rate: $16.00 – $17.40 / hour.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    • Prior experience working with children
    • Ability to work Monday through Friday, 8.5 hours/day
    • Comfortable in water. Ability and willingness to swim and/or supervise in a pool area.
    • Must be 16 or older.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working with youth in a recreation or childcare setting
    • Experience planning and leading activities
    • Experience providing accommodations for individuals with disabilities
    • Bilingual in Spanish or Hmong or other languages
    • CPR certification
    • First Aid training.
