Coaching
Science Focus Program in LPS is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable individual to serve as a Part‑Time Science Olympiad Coach for the high school team. The role involves mentoring talented students, fostering an appreciation for STEM, and preparing the team for local, regional, and state competitions. The ideal candidate has a strong background in science, engineering, or education and is passionate about student success.
Responsibilities- Team Leadership – lead and manage the high school Science Olympiad team of approximately 15‑25 students.
- Event Preparation – guide students in preparing for all competition events (building/lab and study/testing events), providing subject‑specific expertise, training materials, and practice exams.
- Mentorship – inspire students to develop critical thinking, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
- Schedule & Logistics – coordinate and oversee weekly practice sessions, including weekend build sessions, following a schedule determined with the team and school advisor.
- Competition Travel – attend and supervise the team during competitions, which may include local tournaments, Regional, and State competitions (potential weekends).
- Resource Management – manage equipment, materials, and a small budget allocated for team supplies and competition fees.
- Collaboration – work closely with the school's faculty advisor and administration to ensure compliance with school policies.
- Experience – demonstrated knowledge of a broad range of high school‑level science and engineering concepts.
- Skills – excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Commitment – availability to commit to the part‑time schedule through the competition season (typically November – April).
- Background Check – must be able to pass a standard criminal background check.
- Prior experience as a competitor, coach, or event supervisor for Science Olympiad or similar academic competitions (e.g., Science Bowl, Robotics).
- Experience working with high school‑aged students in a mentoring or teaching capacity.
- Time Commitment – approximately 1‑2 hours per week (flexible based on the season's needs). Example schedule: one to two after‑school sessions (1 hour each) and occasional weekend build/review sessions.
- Term – October through early May.
- Compensation – seasonal stipend.
