The Lower Platte South Natural Resources District (NRD) is seeking part‑time Environmental Education Assistants for the 2026/27 school year.

About the Position
  • Field Trip Leadership:
    Assist the NRD’s Environmental Educator in leading field trips at locations such as Wildwood Lake and Platte River State Park.
  • Classroom Presentations:
    Assist with environmental education presentations (K‑12) and community events with topics ranging from soil health and water quality to pollinator habitats.
  • Equipment Handling:
    Help with loading and unloading field trip equipment, including dip‑nets, knee‑high boots, and water bottles.
  • Flexible Scheduling:
    Choose field trips and events that fit your schedule. Typical field trips run Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Evening events, like Family Nature Nights and Test Your Well Nights, usually occur between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
  • Program Topics:
    Topics covered include water quality, habitats, biodiversity, and the importance of natural resources. No prior expertise is required as on‑the‑job training will be provided.
  • Hands‑On

    Experience:

    Gain valuable experience in youth environmental education.
  • Ideal Candidates
  • Comfortable walking outdoors with up to 30 high school students and additional NRD educators.
  • Enthusiastic about nature and fostering a love for the outdoors.
  • Able to communicate clearly and engage students in outdoor learning activities.
  • Job Details
  • Pay:
    Starting at $17.70 per hour, based on experience.
  • Hours:

    Three to thirty hours per week, depending on scheduled educational events (e.g., school field trips, classroom presentations, Family Nature Nights, Test Your Well Nights, and other NRD outreach events).
  • Responsibilities
  • Lead nature‑based educational programs.
  • Provide basic environmental education and supervision in various outdoor settings, including mowed trails, hilly terrain, uneven ground, streams, wetlands, woodlands, and tall grass prairies.
  • Attend initial staff training. (Required)
  • Walk up to 1½ miles on trails.
  • Endure various Nebraska weather conditions.
  • Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 18 with a valid driver’s license.
  • Preferred knowledge of plants, animals, and habitats.
  • Teaching experience is a plus but not required.
