About this role
Motor control is one of our core areas of expertise, making this an exciting opportunity to join a highly skilled engineering team and contribute to transforming the world of motion control for a better tomorrow. This dual-competency role requires expertise in motor control firmware and hardware development, along with strong customer support experience.
Specific duties- Deliver comprehensive technical support to Renesas customers for motor control solutions
- Provide effective technical assistance to Renesas marketing and sales teams during customer design engagements
- Develop, test, and validate motor control firmware on evaluation kits and real hardware platforms
- Serve as the subject matter expert on MCUs, motor control peripherals (ADCs, PWMs, DACs, timers, etc.), and motor control algorithms
- Design and validate motor drive reference boards for applications such as industrial drives and home appliances (e.g., washing machines, air conditioners, refrigerators). This includes component selection and sizing (MOSFETs, IGBTs, analog front ends, DC-DC converters), schematic capture, and PCB layout of high-performance inverter boards, with a focus on optimal thermal performance and low EMI
- Act as a technical consultant to customers by reviewing and providing guidance on their schematics and PCB layouts
- Modify and re-design existing boards to meet specific end-customer application requirements
- Lead and facilitate training sessions and technical evaluations of Renesas motor control solutions for customers and internal sales teams
- Collaborate closely with core engineering team to develop, optimize, and enhance motor control solutions
- Manage and coordinate technical projects with partners and design houses
- Education: Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in Electrical / Electronics Engineering, Control Systems, or a related discipline
- Requirements:
- 5+ years of industrial experience in motor control engineering
- Proficiency in Embedded C programming is essential
- In-depth knowledge of electric motors (BLDC, PMSM, ACIM, etc.), power electronics, and control systems
- Extensive experience developing motor control software, including algorithms such as Field-Oriented Control (FOC) — both sensored and sensorless — trapezoidal control, V/f control, and Direct Torque Control (DTC)
- Solid understanding of current sensing methods, including single-, dual-, and three-shunt techniques
- Strong understanding of three-phase inverters, DC-DC converters, power factor correction (PFC) topologies, and gate drive architectures
- Proficiency in schematic design and PCB layout; experience with Altium Designer is preferred
- Familiarity with simulation tools such as PLECS, LTspice, and SIMPLIS
- Knowledge of magnetic component design, including inductors and transformers
- Understanding of industrial standards for motor drives and safety compliance
- Experience with motor control simulation and modeling tools such as MATLAB/Simulink is desirable
- Proficient in using laboratory equipment, including oscilloscopes, current and voltage probes, dynamo meters, and related tools
- Comfortable working with high-voltage systems
- Prior experience with Renesas microcontrollers is an advantage
- Knowledge of system-level applications such as mixers, grinders, air conditioners, refrigerators, and similar appliances is a plus
- Exposure to machine learning techniques is a bonus
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English, with a proactive mindset
- Willingness to travel up to 25%
