Highway Designer II (Open)
As a Highway Designer II in the Plan Development Unit (PDU) at the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), you will utilize CAD software to produce plan sets for complex highway projects and related civil or transportation engineering projects.
Job duties include:
- Support the Roadway Design Division by creating CAD files for sheet creation, including the title sheets, summary of quantities sheets, typical cross sections sheets, plan and profile sheets, etc. These files are used from preliminary through letting plans for all roadway design projects.
- Create title sheets and summary of quantities sheets for all other NDOT projects, including local projects and consultant design projects.
- Conduct QA/QC checks of plan sets from preliminary through Plans, Specifications, & Estimates (PS&E) turn-ins, checking for adherence to NDOT standards and practices.
- Compile the final plan sets PDF file for PS&E turn-ins.
- Communicate effectively with people in the department.
- After the required skills have been achieved, assist coworkers in creating plans following the guidelines set by NDOT.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications include coursework, training, or experience in design, drafting, engineering, highway construction, or other construction fields using CADD applications and practices.
Preferred qualifications include graduation from a recognized two-year technical community college, education or experience in civil drafting with Micro Station, Open Roads, or AutoCAD, and experience in Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of NDOT's standards and practices, knowledge of Microsoft Office, Micro Station, Open Roads, or AutoCAD, and Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam, proficiency in applying Computer-Aided Design technology to roadway plans and standard or special plans, ability to read and create highway project plan sets, and the ability to work with a minimum amount of supervision.
