Transportation Engineer

Transportation Engineer Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field required
  • 5+ years of professional engineering experience with a focus on transportation engineering, or 6+ years without EIT
  • EIT Registration required, or 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration or ability to obtain within 6 months preferred
  • Experience preparing construction plans and/or studies for roadway or traffic projects
  • Proven ability to direct tasks and perform QA/QC
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD and/or Micro Station (or other engineering design software)
  • Strong knowledge of DOT standards, permitting, and construction practices
  • Valid state driver's license or reliable transportation to project sites

Transportation Engineer Preferred Background & Skills

  • Completed coursework in transportation engineering and/or highway design
  • Experience with Auto Turn and GuideSIGN
  • Strong data analysis, interpretation, and technical writing skills
  • Knowledge of Federal and State ADA standards and guidelines
  • Experience with grant application preparation
  • Active participation in professional organizations

Transportation Engineer Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Execute technical engineering assignments across all phases of transportation and infrastructure projects
  • Collaborate with project teams to develop innovative, sustainable transportation solutions
  • Prepare engineering plans, reports, cost estimates, permits, maps, and graphics for client and public meetings
  • Lead field reviews, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement efforts to inform design decisions
  • Direct project tasks, monitor progress, and ensure technical accuracy and schedule adherence
  • Provide mentorship to junior staff and help maintain quality assurance standards
  • Support business development through proposal preparation and client communication
  • Deliver technical presentations internally and externally
