The Strategic Air Command (SAC) & Aerospace Museum, situated between Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska, spans over 300,000 square feet, offering education and entertainment to visitors from around the globe. Originally established in 1959 to commemorate the aircraft and history of the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War, the museum also highlights scientific advancements, technological innovations, and education. Partnering with the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Office of STEM Education, the museum provides cutting‑edge learning opportunities for students, educators, and visitors of all ages.

As a 501(c)(3) non‑profit organization, the museum relies on support from individuals and corporations to continue its mission of preserving history and inspiring innovation.

Role Description

The Vice President of Finance is responsible for the financial strategy, management, and sustainability of the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum. This role oversees all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, risk management, and compliance, to ensure the long‑term financial health of the Museum. The VP of Finance will work closely with the CEO and Board of Directors to develop financial plans and strategies that support the Museum’s mission and drive fiscal growth.

This position reports to the CEO and is an important member of the leadership team.

Duties & Responsibilities

Financial Strategy and Sustainability (25%)

  • Develop and oversee the Museum’s financial strategy to ensure long‑term sustainability and growth.
  • Lead the preparation and management of the annual budget, financial forecasting, and cash flow projections.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations, nonprofit accounting standards, and reporting requirements.
  • Conduct financial risk assessments and implement strategies for financial risk mitigation.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to the CEO and Board of Directors to support strategic decision‑making.
  • Oversee the investment portfolio and financial reserves of the Museum.

Financial Operations & Compliance (25%)

  • Supervise all financial activities, including accounting, payroll, tax filings, and audits.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure timely reporting of financial performance.
  • Develop and implement internal controls and financial policies to safeguard assets and prevent fraud.
  • Oversee grant financial management, ensuring compliance with grant requirements and reporting.
  • Ensure transparency and accuracy in financial reporting to stakeholders and regulatory agencies.
  • Work closely with external auditors and tax professionals during annual audits and tax filings.

Nonprofit Management & Collaboration (15%)

  • Thorough knowledge of budgeting and accounting practices, process and procedures of nonprofit organizations.
  • Audit bi‑weekly payroll GL entries and payroll processing reports for accuracy and reporting compliance.
  • Collaborate with department heads to align financial planning with operational goals.
  • Present financial reports to the Board of Directors, ensuring clear and concise communication of financial performance.
  • Support fundraising initiatives by providing financial insights and strategies for donor relations.
  • Represent the Museum in financial matters with external partners, donors, and grant agencies.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation preferred.
  • Minimum of 5‑8 years of progressive experience in financial management, preferably in a nonprofit or museum setting.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit financial regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Experience in budget development, financial forecasting, and strategic financial planning.
  • Proficiency with advanced financial software systems; strong skills in balance sheet reconciliation and general ledger accounting.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills to communicate clear goals and facilitate problem solving.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with executive leadership, board members, and external stakeholders.
