Nelnet is seeking a highly motivated Financial Analyst Intern to join our Finance team. This internship offers hands-on experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and business performance evaluation across one of Nelnet’s business segments.

This role is ideal for students interested in how finance connects people, process, and strategy—not accounting-focused, but business-facing finance that helps leaders understand how the business makes money and how to make better decisions. The intern will contribute to real projects, develop financial models, document processes, and help simplify complex financial concepts for future use.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities, including exposure to how forecasts are built, refined, and communicated.
  • Assist with financial analysis related to Nelnet Financial Services (NFS), including understanding profitability, revenue drivers, and cost structures.
  • Research and help document how the business makes money, including concepts such as reinsurance, profitability measurement, and segment economics.
  • Analyze income statements, identify key performance indicators (KPIs), and evaluate drivers that matter most to business performance.
  • Support client and product profitability analysis to ensure financial insights align with how the business is actually operating.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of financial models, including modeling and projection work.
  • Use tools such as Copilot and other analytics tools to build, adjust, and interpret financial models and forecasts.
  • Assist in documenting financial processes, frameworks, and models to create repeatable, scalable resources for future teams.
  • Learn how finance partners with business leaders by participating in conversations that connect financial insights to operational decisions.
  • Help build structure around financial processes, including planning, forecasting, and performance tracking.
  • Participate in Nelnet intern programming, professional development opportunities, and team activities.
Education

Enrolled in a 4-year degree, preferable rising junior or senior status, in majors such as Finance, Business, Economics, Analytics, or a related field.

Experience
  • Coursework or experience related to financial analysis, forecasting, modeling, or business analytics
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel; exposure to financial modeling or data analysis tools preferred
  • Interest in learning how finance supports strategy and decision-making in a business environment
