Position: Medical Lab Tech / Medical Lab Scientist - Customer Service

General Summary

Performs high complexity medical laboratory tests, procedures and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.

Principal Job Functions
  • * Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.
  • * Serves as CLIA-defined General Supervisor, and/or oversees other laboratory staff members’ performance of laboratory tests according to laboratory standards, policies and procedures in a timely thorough manner and performs all laboratory procedures in all functional areas within the laboratory.
  • * Analyzes test results and enters data into the computer using laboratory standards, policies, and procedures.
  • * Performs and analyzes quality control measures to ensure accurate clinical data; analyzes unacceptable quality control results and troubleshoots shifts or trends as necessary.
  • * Maintains competency and proficiency on all laboratory instrumentation and procedures; performs and documents preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment, troubleshooting problems as needed; supports comparison and analysis of new tests and instruments. Notifies immediate supervisory personnel of equipment/instrument issues and calls Service regarding issues.
  • * Communicates with clients, coworkers, and leadership, transmitting patient care testing and results, appropriate ideas, information, and opinions clearly, concisely and courteously; maintains employee, patient, client, and corporate confidentiality.
  • * Performs general housekeeping tasks to ensure a safe work environment; maintains adequate supplies in the work area.
  • * Participates in cross‑training new employees, students, other technical staff and support staff; evaluates students’ clinical and technical abilities; assists in writing training guidelines and checklists for new hires and students.
  • * Works collaboratively with all laboratory staff to ensure completion of testing and communication of necessary information to assist testing completion.
  • * Completes all mandatory safety, infection control, laboratory and Medical Center training and follows guidelines per written protocols.
  • Assists in reviewing, revising and writing laboratory procedures.
  • Uses quality improvement processes, programs or outcomes to help improve department operations; assists with LEAN projects.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
  • Performs service excellence must‑haves to achieve an excellent patient/customer experience.
  • Basic knowledge in phlebotomy and phlebotomy procedures and ability to perform phlebotomy if required by laboratory facility.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge,

Skills And Abilities
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory equipment/instrumentation, test procedures and standards.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
  • Skill in the use and preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply such concepts to practical situations.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and engage critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
