Nationwide Financial could be the place for you. At Nationwide, “on your side” goes beyond just words. Our customers and partners are at the center of everything we do and we’re looking for associates who are passionate about delivering extraordinary care.

Senior Life Underwriting Consultant role focusing on examining prospective bank-owned, corporate-owned and corporate-sponsored, individually-owned life insurance policies. You will assess and analyze a bank or company’s risk profile and case design to determine the appropriate underwriting offer, coverage, term and conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive, evaluate and underwrite, on a medical or non-medical basis, more complex life insurance applications up to the maximum handling limit approved by the Chief Underwriter. Protect confidentiality of documentation and information throughout the underwriting process. Work with minimal oversight on highly sophisticated assignments requiring niche knowledge.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of manuals, underwriting materials, rules, regulations, procedures, medical factors and practices impacting mortality and morbidity underwriting. Understand underwriting administrative systems to conduct business and provide outstanding service to internal and external customers and field partners.
  • Evaluate applications requiring additional evidence of insurability and determine the need for, and authorize, ordering of underwriting requirements (e.g., medical examinations, blood profiles, attending physician reports, inspections, client interviews, and other essential information).
  • Develop understanding of accelerated underwriting processes and apply risk-based decision-making to determine required information and risk class; apply flexible decision-making and use of alternative medical information while maintaining risk tolerance.
  • Consult with team underwriters, accept referred cases when designated, and supervise handling of unusual or complicated cases. Share innovative solutions and facilitate open communication to achieve results.
  • Evaluate and quantify data from personal or business financial information and establish insurable interest in line with indemnification principles. Handle complex financial underwriting applications and mentor others through referrals and training.
  • Coordinate and negotiate both automatic and facultative reinsurance within the terms of Nationwide’s treaties and product/market practices.
  • Engage in special projects as assigned, including plans, timelines and requirements; meet and present with field partners to gain understanding of partner needs and expectations.
  • Determine eligibility for temporary insurance and authorize refunds or reimbursements for medical records or related requirements as needed to confirm evidence of insurability.
  • Interpret electrocardiogram tracings as evidence for life insurance applications and consult with Medical Director as needed. Collaborate with Chief Underwriter and Medical Director as required.
  • Support regional goals and partnerships; resolve challenges with effective solutions to improve time-to-service, submission quality and underwriting efficiency.
  • Handle large cases with significant authority and accountability as described in guidelines (e.g., up to $20,000,000 for life, up to $1,500,000 for morbidity, and expert discretion on Intelligent Underwriting).
