GENERAL

SUMMARY:

Serves as a clinical expert and resource for the operating rooms, partnering with leadership, medical staff, and perioperative teams to enhance patient care and outcomes. Oversees the planning, coordination, and delivery of orientation for clinical support staff, including initial and ongoing competency assessments, skill development, and continued clinical knowledge advancement for those engaged in perioperative practice. Facilitates learning and fosters critical thinking through diverse teaching strategies.

Ensures compliance with established clinical policies, protocols, regulatory requirements, and professional standards.

PRINCIPAL

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • * Provides onsite presence during night shifts to support new staff, assess ongoing competencies, and promote continued professional development.
  • May collaborate with leadership in interviewing and hiring for the assigned unit or area and actively supports staff recognition and retention initiatives.
  • Ensures consistent adherence to established policies and procedures during daily interactions with staff
  • * Assists and supports leadership with communicating and implementing unit/area changes. Collaborates to ensure continued maintenance of changes.
  • * Coaches staff in a timely, objective, and constructive manner when practice or safety concerns are observed or reported. Communicates with leadership when individuals do not respond to appropriate guidance or fail to meet established standards of care. Documents corrective actions and reviews them with staff as appropriate.
  • * Maintains a high level of competency in surgical technique and demonstrates clinical proficiency by applying evidence-based practice in the clinical setting.
  • * Takes scrub assignments during volume or acuity changes or during increased staffing demand.
  • Appropriately uses, explains, and evaluates clinical equipment.
  • * Demonstrates, evaluates, and facilitates the learning and development of critical thinking skills and all aspects of clinical practice by assessing the educational and developmental needs of clinical staff, preceptors, and departmental personnel, and by designing and implementing effective learning strategies.
  • Develops education and competency requirements based on evidence based practice for population specific, condition specific, and treatment related protocols, including those involving medications and equipment.
  • Models appropriate learning methodologies to promote mastery of competencies in assigned area of surgical care.
  • Facilitates the orientation schedule and training methods, including online orientation and monitors and tracks progress.
  • Collaborates with other departments/units and educators for effective use of education resources.
  • * Participates in performance improvement initiatives in collaboration with clinical staff and interdisciplinary teams, including conducting performance audits related to assigned responsibilities. Evaluates safety practices, supports the assessment of new products and equipment, and monitors emerging research to identify best practices. Promotes the adoption of new technologies and evidence based practices among staff and physicians and communicates performance and process outcomes to the team.
  • Utilizes the findings from quality improvement to enhance patient care, customer satisfaction (physicians and patients/families), and cost-effectiveness of services.
  • Maintains competence and education to function as a surgical scrub and preceptor, when necessary.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
