As a Research and Laboratory Safety Specialist, you will:

• Conduct campus audits in areas of laboratory safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, biological safety, laser safety, and hazardous waste.
• Develop, review, and disseminate documentation relating to the Research/Laboratory Safety programs and processes, including drafting safety‑related communications and technical guidance documents.
• Assists with reviewing Standard Operating Procedures, including researching appropriate hazard control and mitigation strategies, including engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment ( PPE ) needs for laboratory research operations.
• Support research initiatives involving biosafety, radiation safety, and hazardous materials, and assist key safety officers with implementing compliance plans and procedures.
• Collaborate with researchers in maintaining and complying with the Controlled Substances program.
• Train and advise researchers on biosafety, radiation safety, and laboratory safety principles.
• Ensure compliance with NIH Guidelines, Radiation Control regulations, OSHA standards, and laboratory waste management rules.
• Provide support to the Radiation Safety Committee.
• Monitor federal standards changes and advise on potential impacts, drafting comments for proposed changes.
• Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions.

• Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, virology, biochemistry, physics, engineering, or other related life/physical-science area or equivalent experience/education.
• 1+ year experience in laboratory safety.
• Knowledge of applicable regulations and standards relative to laboratory safety ( OSHA Laboratory Standard).
• Ability to work independently and organize/prioritize assignments.
• Ability to work with a diverse population and foster a collaborative work environment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong technical writing skills.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.

• Advanced degree in biological sciences, microbiology, virology, molecular biology, health physics, public health or related science; education, training, and relevant work experience is considered equivalent to an advanced degree.
