Job Description

We are seeking a full‑time plumber for the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI). The role includes installing, altering, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining pipe systems and fixtures throughout the facility. Duties
  • Installs, alters, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains pipe systems designed to conduct flow of hot and cold water, sewage, gas, steam, air, oil, and fire suppression systems.
  • Installs and maintains pipe systems located above, under, and on the ground; in, on, and between walls, floors, and ceilings.
  • Installs, alters, repairs, and maintains plumbing fixtures such as heating devices, sinks, lavatories, toilets, tubs, showers, water heaters, faucets, drains, hydrants, water coolers, and laundry and kitchen equipment.
  • Installs, alters, repairs, and maintains devices such as traps, vents, drains, siphons, and pumps integral to plumbing systems, meter fittings, couplings, and unions.
  • Installs, alters, repairs, and maintains fire protection sprinkler systems, water treatment plants, and sewage plants.
  • Adjusts and repairs steam pumps and regulators, water pumps and heaters, air compressors, and fuel storage tanks and pumping systems.
  • Fits valves, couplings, shock arrestors, and other fittings to pipe sections; adjusts connections and pipe circuitry to correct air lock, water hammer, expansion, contraction, and friction.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections of plumbing fixtures and systems, and initiates work orders to prevent breakdowns and correct deficiencies.
  • Cleans, repairs, and maintains all tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
  • Sketches plumbing layouts, reads and interprets blueprints and specifications, and determines dimensions and quantities of materials required to complete a job.
  • Estimates time, cost, and materials required for the completion of work orders, and requisitions materials as necessary.
  • Advises in the selection, ordering and storage of plumbing materials, equipment, and hardware.

Instructs helpers in plumbing work and conducts informal apprenticeship training.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Training and experience in the plumbing trade.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and layouts.
  • Experience with different types of plumbing systems and fixtures, preventative maintenance, plumbing materials & equipment, and plumbing codes.
  • Experience estimating job costs.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience maintaining an inventory of plumbing supplies & equipment.
  • Experience performing complex plumbing installations and repairs, and installation of plumbing systems and fixtures.
  • Experience with budget preparation as related to plumbing projects.
  • Plumbing license would be helpful, but is not required.

Must be willing to be on call 2‑3 times throughout the year. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre‑employment exams in this order: a medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, a drug test. Upon arrival at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Corrections Training Program.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of plumbing trade practices, materials, tools, equipment, techniques, occupational hazards, safety precautions, and preventative maintenance. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, layout designs, and specifications; operate and care for tools and equipment; understand and follow written and oral instructions. Skill in the appropriate and efficient installation and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems.
