Responsibilities- All Levels (I, II, III, IV): Periodically inspect, clean, and perform preventative maintenance of plumbing equipment and spaces; identify and repair or report potential problems; maintain and repair general plumbing equipment, components, and mechanical parts and systems; perform phases of general, aesthetic, and preventive maintenance of equipment; assist trade‑based or licensed technicians to complete daily tasks; assist with maintenance and repair of complex hydronic and piping systems;
ensure cleanliness and organization in assigned work areas; comply with regulations and guidelines; complete work orders and operate an electronic time‑keeping system. - Plumber II: In addition to the above, work more independently, use schematics, blueprint drawings, trade tools, and applicable systems; maintain and install new plumbing systems with minimal supervision; communicate and coordinate with outside vendors and manufacturers regarding repair and replacement of building components; learn basics of equipment management controls (EMCS) to start, stop, monitor, or change conditions on HVAC and hydronic systems.
- Plumber III: Maintain and repair backflow prevention devices; assist with maintenance, repair, commission, and installation of complex hydronic and piping systems; communicate and coordinate with external parties, manufacturers, engineers, and consultants regarding repair and replacement of building components and projects; trend data and reset building maintenance meters utilizing an EMCS; generate activity and outage notifications.
- Plumber/Pipefitter IV: Ensure daily operations, maintenance, repair, commission, and installation of complex hydronic and piping systems; make life‑safety decisions for installation and maintenance of natural gas equipment; locate and repair natural gas leaks; train, mentor, and verify work of others; foster a positive work environment; motivate and encourage staff; support leadership; contribute to the development and implementation of departmental vision and goals.
- All Levels: Assigned to a rotating on‑call schedule; may be required for after‑hours work.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; able to lift 50 lbs; able to work from a ladder or aerial equipment; available by cell phone for campus emergencies; available for regular weekend and after‑hours on‑call rotations; must have a valid driver’s license and meet university driver eligibility requirements.
- Plumber I: Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions; strong thinking and reasoning skills; good communication, thoroughness, attention to detail, time management, and organization; familiarity with operating tools and machinery.
- Plumber II: In addition to the above, at least 2 years of experience with general plumbing and maintenance or equivalent; understanding of building and construction principles; ability to troubleshoot plumbing systems independently; knowledge of and ability to operate a variety of tools and machinery; basic computer skills; strong analytical thinking and reasoning; excellent communication; thoroughness, high attention to detail, and strong time management;
ability to read and interpret project blueprints and specifications; knowledge of trade processes, procedures, and codes. - Plumber III: In addition to the above, at least 2 years of experience installing, assembling, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems; strong understanding of building and construction principles, plumbing systems, and applicable codes; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; ability to…
