Responsibilities

Plumber I, II, III, and IV

All levels periodically inspect, clean, and perform preventive maintenance of plumbing equipment and spaces to identify and repair potential problems. Duties include maintaining and repairing general plumbing equipment, mechanical parts, and systems, assisting licensed technicians, maintaining cleanliness and organization in work areas, and completing work orders while operating an electronic timekeeping system.

Plumber II

In addition to the above duties, this level works more independently, performs complex tasks using schematics, blueprint drawings, trade tools, and applicable systems, installs new plumbing systems with minimal supervision, coordinates with outside vendors and manufacturers, and learns the basics of equipment management controls (EMCS) for HVAC and hydronic systems.

Plumber III

Plumbers at this level maintain and repair backflow prevention devices, assist with the maintenance, repair, commissioning, and installation of complex hydronic and piping systems, coordinate with external parties and consultants, trend data, reset building maintenance meters using EMCS, and generate activity and outage notifications.

Plumber/Pipefitter IV

Level IV ensures proper daily operations, maintenance, repair, commissioning, and installation of complex hydronic and piping systems, uses life‑safety decisions for natural gas equipment, locates and repairs gas leaks, trains and mentors others, and contributes to the development and implementation of departmental vision and goals.

All levels will be assigned to a rotating on–call schedule; urgent situations may require after‑hours work.

Minimum

Required Qualifications Plumber I, II, III, and IV
  • High school or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work from a ladder or aerial equipment.
  • Available by cell phone for campus emergencies and for regular rotations on weekends and after‑hours on‑call schedule.
  • Valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.
Plumber I
  • Comprehends and follows written and verbal instructions.
  • Demonstrates thinking and reasoning skills.
  • Has good communication and organizational skills.
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with tools and machinery.
Plumber II
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with general plumbing and maintenance or equivalent.
  • Understanding of building and construction principles.
  • Ability to troubleshoot plumbing systems independently.
  • Knowledge and experience operating a variety of tools and machinery.
  • Basic computer skills and strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Research, read, interpret, and work with project blueprints and specifications.
  • Knowledge of processes, procedures, and codes required of the trade.
Plumber III
  • Minimum 2 years of experience installing, assembling, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems.
  • Strong understanding of building and construction principles, plumbing systems, and applicable codes.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Comprehension and follow of complex technical information.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills.
