As a Fire Alarm Technician, you will:
  • Install, alter, add, maintain, troubleshoot, and/or repair fire life safety systems.
  • Interpret and use schematics and blueprint drawings to complete the installation and troubleshooting of wiring and device termination of fire life safety systems.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations such as applicable building, electrical, and fire codes, and university and departmental standards and guidelines.
  • Project and maintenance support of fire alarm panel device control and manipulation for system troubleshooting and shutdown.
  • Test low-voltage electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring and equipment with testing devices (ohmmeters, voltmeters, ammeters, etc.) to ensure compatibility and functionality of the system.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the University of Nebraska State Fire Marshall/Code Officials to ensure building code compliance. Perform inspection and acceptance testing of fire alarm systems.
  • Complete work orders and utilize an electronic timekeeping system daily.
What you bring to the position:
  • 1+ years of experience working with fire alarm panel device control and manipulation.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Good analytical thinking and reasoning skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Thoroughness and high attention to detail.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of building and construction principles.
  • Understanding of electrical systems, applicable codes, and supporting electrical systems.
  • Knowledge, experience, and ability to operate a variety of tools and machinery.
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory and NFPA 70/72 National Electrical and Fire Alarm Code.
  • Strong understanding of International Building Code as related to fire life safety systems.
  • Ability to research, read, interpret, and work with project blueprints and specifications.
  • Skilled in operating testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and ammetersto testand diagnosecircuits in low voltage electrical fire life safety equipment.
  • Knowledgeable of and skilled in the processes, procedures, and codes required of the trade.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • NICET Level II Certification or higher or a State of Nebraska Fire Alarm Inspector License is required. Individuals who hold a NICET certification, but do not currently hold the State of Nebraska Fire Alarm Inspector License, must be able to obtain the license within six months of employment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.
This position is part of a career ladder with multiple levels based on qualifications, with pay commensurate with each level. Responsibilities at higher levels may include:
  • Install and configure fire life safety systems, networking, communication, and alarm monitoring systems.
  • Perform fire alarm estimating.
  • Coordinate work and schedules with supervisors, staff, contractors, building occupants, project managers, and engineers.
  • Train, mentor, and verify the work of other staff, students, temps, and/or on-call personnel.
  • Assist with project development, employee training, and safety coordination.
  • Generate activity and outage notifications.
  • Coordinate and perform interfacing of auxiliary fire life safety systems.
  • Confirm scope, schedule, and budget requirements of work assignments.
  • Communicate and coordinate with outside vendors and manufacturers relative to electrical equipment and systems.
  • Coordinate project changes promptly and provide as-built documentation at the completion of the project.

This position is full-time and is classified as nonexempt. This position has a set schedule and includes on-call responsibilities.
