Position: Police Evidence Technician (PT)

Open Until Filled or March 20, 2026, whichever comes first.

Primary Reason Classification Exists

Performs administrative and clerical work in support of evidence processing and the Investigation Division’s activities, or other division of the Police Department as needed.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class is responsible for the controlling, processing, storage and security of evidence and recovered or found property as well as records, reports, and information related to evidence, recovered or found property. Work requires detailed knowledge of the laws and practices governing the storage and control of evidence; general knowledge of standard office procedures and practices; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the department;

ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions; ability to prepare and maintain records and reports; ability to operate personal computer and enter data; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. The employee is expected to follow standard processes and to assure the safety and security of evidence, recovered or found property. Work will also be subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Major, Captain, Investigation Sergeant and is reviewed through observation, conferences, reports, and review of work performed in the assigned function.

Responsibilities
  • Receives, processes and stores evidence; controls and maintains evidence in a secure manner; prepares and maintains files and records.
  • Prepares items for transport, and transports items to a lab upon request.
  • Tracks evidence when it is checked in and out of area.
  • Collects evidence as it comes back from the lab; ensures appropriate authorities have proper paperwork from the lab.
  • Prepares and disseminates monthly disposition sheet for evidence tracking purposes.
  • Files cases upon completion.
  • Purges evidence and recovered property in accordance with applicable laws by destroying, returning items to owner, submitting for auction or trade.
  • Enters data according to internal departmental standards.
  • Handles information confidentially and in accordance with laws and operating procedures.
  • Acts as Police Records Clerk as required.
  • Assists other office staff and law enforcement officers, as needed.
  • Performs custodial tasks when needed.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Skills and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of law enforcement evidence, recovered, and found property requirements.
  • Ability to input data into computer based on federal and state guidelines or internal procedures.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in order to meet needs for the law enforcement efforts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement officers and staff, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work standards which may be performed under stress.
  • Ability to handle confidential information and records appropriately.
  • Proofreads materials for content and errors.
  • Ability to handle departmental funds appropriately.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of reaching, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare data and statistics, operate a computer terminal, do extensive reading, and proofread and perform visual inspection of work performed.
Desirable

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and some work experience in records or general clerical work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
  • Ability to obtain certification by the State of North Carolina as a DCI Operator within three months of employment.
  • Possession of a valid NC Driver’s License.
