Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, or his/her designee, the Day Camp Counselor is responsible for ensuring the safety, well‑being, and positive experience of all camp participants. Counselors create a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment while leading daily activities, supervising campers, and maintaining a clean and safe camp setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following.
- Supervise assigned campers to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and meaningful camp experience.
- Plan, organize, implement, and actively lead daily camp activities.
- Assist with preparing, cleaning, and maintaining camp spaces and materials.
- Follow all Village and Department policies, procedures, and camp protocols.
- Supervise campers during swim time; counselors are required to be in the pool when assigned.
- Establish positive, supportive, and respectful relationships with campers.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to camper, parent, and staff inquiries or concerns.
- Encourage positive behavior, problem‑solving skills, and appropriate interactions between campers.
- Support the creation of a fun, inclusive, and age‑appropriate environment.
- Manage attendance records and camper documentation in an organized and timely manner.
- Implement behavior management procedures proactively and consistently.
- Serve as a positive role model for campers and peers.
- Work effectively with children of all abilities and collaborate with M‑NASR when needed.
- Assist with monitoring inventory and supplies.
- Communicate suggestions for program improvements to the Recreation Supervisor.
- Comply with all Village policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
The wage range for the position is $15‑16. This position is seasonal and does not qualify for benefits.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE- One year of related experience is preferred but not required.
- CPR, AED, First Aid, and Epi‑Pen/Glucagon certifications required prior to the start of camp (training may be provided).
Proficient with email communication.
LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to compose and prepare reports and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITIESAbility to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES- Ability to work with children
- Ability to prioritize duties and complete tasks within allotted planning hours
- Understanding of the principles, practices, and objectives of Parks and Recreation administration and recreation programming
- Capacity to troubleshoot, problem solve, and use good judgment
- Ability to deal with the public tactfully and courteously
- Commitment to promoting the positive image and growth of the Day Camp program
