CNC Centerless Grinding Technician

The CNC Centerless Grinding Technician sets up, programs, and operates precision OD and centerless grinding machines to produce high-precision components with tight tolerances. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, hands-on CNC grinding experience, and the ability to interpret complex drawings, troubleshoot issues, and support continuous improvement in a regulated manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Program and set up precision OD and centerless grinding machines to meet tight tolerance requirements.
  • Read and interpret complex part drawings and convert them into functional, conforming parts.
  • Set up and operate all grinding equipment, including basic set-ups, tool changes, and minor adjustments to ensure quoted cycle times are achieved.
  • Use multiple metrology methods, both contact and non-contact, to verify part configuration and conformance to print specifications such as surface finish, straightness, and concentricity.
  • Develop tooling and gauging solutions to produce and measure complex part geometries.
  • Troubleshoot parts during set-up and production runs to ensure quality and cycle time targets are met.
  • Maintain and monitor grinding equipment during production, including running machines throughout a shift as needed.
  • Replace blades and other consumable components and bring machines back up to production level performance.
  • Perform precision grinder set-ups, operate equipment, edit programs, and make offsets to maintain part quality.
  • Cost-reduce jobs once in production by optimizing set-ups, cycle times, and tooling approaches.
  • Ensure daily output targets are met and machines run on schedule at expected quality levels.
  • Work with the contract review team to provide estimates on new customer parts, including set-up and cycle times, tooling costs, and expected scrap.
  • Interface with Quality, Manufacturing, and Engineering personnel to resolve production issues and collaborate on customer quotes.
  • Troubleshoot machines and feeder systems and collaborate with external machine tool providers when needed.
  • Maintain safety standards and comply with all standard operating procedures.
  • Support and participate in Lean Manufacturing initiatives and continuous improvement activities.
  • Assist with special projects as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Essential Skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and machining experience
  • 2–4 years of relevant CNC high-precision manufacturing experience with tight tolerances.
  • Ability to perform complete set-ups on one or more CNC grinder types such as Gen-5, Gen-X, CAM, or Tactic.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC set-up, operation, and adjustment in a production environment.
  • Experience with precision grinder set-up, operation, program editing, and making offsets.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex part drawings and technical documentation.
  • Proficiency in using contact and non-contact metrology methods to verify part geometry and surface characteristics.
  • Comprehensive understanding of PK4000 or similar inspection systems to validate set-ups and production parts.
  • Ability to troubleshoot grinding processes, machines, and feeder systems and adjust parameters to restore production performance.
  • Experience working in a regulated manufacturing environment such as medical, aerospace, or automotive (preferred).
  • Experience in a quality management system environment such as ISO 9001:2015 or similar.
  • Experience in a Lean Manufacturing environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including gathering and analyzing information and developing alternative solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively in group problem-solving situations and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain production rates and meet quoted cycle times while sustaining quality.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Mechanical certification or formal mechanical training is a plus.
  • Centerless grinding experience is a strong plus.
  • Experience in medical device, aerospace, or automotive manufacturing is advantageous.
  • Experience in a high-precision wire or small-component manufacturing is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with polishing, grinding, and machining processes in a high-precision environment.
  • Experience with maintenance and repair of CNC grinding equipment is a plus.
  • Comfort working with cost estimation for new parts, including tooling and scrap considerations.
  • Ability to support continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiatives in production.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interface with Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, and contract review teams.
