Special Education Teacher

The Special Education Teacher will provide academic and behavioral instruction daily to students. The teacher will deliver research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives in each student's IEP. Assessment of student progress will be required to determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques. Various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning will be employed to enable students to meet their IEP goals.

The teacher will develop and implement annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students. These plans will include present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and related services required to meet those goals. Active participation on problem-solving and intervention teams will be essential to facilitate early involvement and resolution of learning or behavioral problems. The teacher will schedule team meetings and work cooperatively with team members to develop instructional goals and strategies.

Coordination of the delivery of special education services outlined in each student's IEP is required. The teacher will create a positive learning experience emphasizing individualized instruction. Implementation of standardized and benchmarking assessments, along with individual accommodations noted in the IEP, will be required. Progress monitoring for ELA, Math, and behavior will be completed as appropriate. The teacher will serve as the primary contact for parents.

Conducting special education evaluations and reevaluations will be part of the IEP team responsibilities. Direction, supervision, and evaluation of educational assistants may be required. Compliance with all organizational policies and state/federal rules and regulations is mandatory. Completion of all reporting requirements for the district and state will be expected. The teacher will establish and maintain student control and discipline in the classroom and during school activities.

A classroom structure and consistency will be implemented to encourage student responsibility, cooperation, and respect. Collaboration with educational professionals and community service providers regarding student needs will be essential. The teacher will provide consultation to classroom teachers on adaptations, instructional modifications, and behavior intervention plans. Support for the instructional and behavioral model on which the program is based will be provided.

Continuous communication with parents will be maintained. The behavioral model will be implemented consistently and fairly. All required reports pertaining to student progress will be prepared and submitted in a timely manner. The administration will be informed of any special concerns and needs regarding individual students. Effective teamwork will be essential, with the teacher acting as the IEP Case Manager.

The teacher will pursue professional development by staying updated on changes in the field, attending courses and workshops. Teaching methods and materials will be selected and adapted to meet the individual needs of students. Participation in events outside of regular work hours, such as orientation and open houses, will be required. Assigning work to teacher assistants, as well as modeling best practices for students with special needs, will be part of the role.

Assessment of work and providing feedback will be essential. Participation in staff development and school improvement activities will be necessary to maintain professional growth. Plans incorporating best practices or new strategies will be expected.
