GAI is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Substation Protection & Control Engineer to oversee the design, development, and implementation of protection and control systems for high‑voltage substations. This role will serve as a technical leader within the engineering team, ensuring that all designs meet regulatory standards, project requirements, and industry best practices. Work‑life balance is valued; the position can be performed in a hybrid capacity in the locations listed above or as a fully remote capacity.
Responsibilities- Lead the engineering design and review of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution substations (typically 69kV to 500kV).
- Develop and approve protection schemes including one‑line diagrams, three‑line diagrams, control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Integrate protection and control drawings to interface with physical layout and substation design.
- Design control and relay panel layouts and assemble specifications.
- Prepare design specifications and overall bill of materials.
- Design and size auxiliary systems (AC/DC load centers, batteries, chargers).
- Design and size conduit, cable, and backup generators.
- Travel to client offices, substations, and sites for scoping and project meetings.
- Review junior engineer designs to ensure compliance with client standards and identify gaps.
- Document QA/QC reviews, maintain records, and communicate information to the team.
- Lead tasks on multiple projects in accordance with GAI’s high project‑management standards.
- B.S. or M.S. in Engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
- 6+ years of experience in substation protection and control engineering.
- Strong knowledge of engineering principles, project management, and risk analysis.
- Excellent communication skills for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Ability to mentor junior staff and lead multidisciplinary teams.
