Overview
GAI Consultants is seeking a Project Engineer 1 (P&C) for substation-related work. This position will perform substation and protection and controls design, provide technical guidance/mentoring, design reviews, QA/QC, and enforcement related to protection & controls design services. The candidate will work on substation/protection and control projects including detailed design for high voltage substations through 500kV, with a Client First focus.
Job Duties- Manage, design, and perform QA/QC checks related to technical activities including: development or revisions to drawings for one-lines, physical arrangement, grounding, schematics and wiring, control and relaying panels, and equipment wiring; coordinate with CAD operators to develop organized quality CAD drawings.
- Integrate protection and control drawings to interface with the physical layout and design of substations.
- Design interfacing with SCADA systems and communications including RTUs, HMIs, and IEDs.
- Develop control and relay panel layouts including assembling the specifications.
- Create project criteria and design specifications including the overall bill of materials.
- Design and sizing of auxiliary systems including AC/DC load centers, batteries and chargers; design and sizing of conduit, cable, and backup generators.
- Order long-lead item materials.
- Perform Point to Point checks.
- Review junior engineers' designs, verify they meet client standards and specifications, and identify gaps in client protection.
- Document QAQC reviews, maintain record documents, and communicate information to the team.
- Travel to other offices, meet with clients, and attend project-specific meetings regularly.
- Manage tasks on multiple projects to high company standards of project management.
- Assist with development of scope of services and cost estimates for Substation and P&C projects.
- Manage competing priorities using sound engineering and financial judgment to determine optimal solutions.
- Be flexible with shifting deadlines and scope changes.
- Identify project barriers and mitigate them without schedule impacts.
- Manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and work under deadlines and unexpected developments.
- Ability to work extended hours when required.
- Applies knowledge of engineering principles affecting their organization.
- Keeps informed of new methods and recommends changes in projects.
- Leads projects of moderate complexity or major projects.
- Analyzes complex problems across specialty areas and ethical considerations.
- Indoor office work; sit for extended periods; frequent use of hands for typing and writing; visual acuity for detailed work.
- Occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching; ability to travel for meetings, training, or business purposes.
- Lift/carry up to 10-20 pounds.
- Adequate hearing for conversations and meetings.
- 10+ Years of Experience.
- B.S. or M.S. Engineering.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) License, reciprocity in multiple states.
- Occasionally serves as the technical advisor in advanced concepts and methods in an assigned area.
- Keeps informed of developments affecting practice for recommending project changes.
- Occasionally develops new techniques or improved processes, materials, or products.
- Oversees a project team of engineers and technicians.
- Plans, schedules, and coordinates preparation of documents for multiple major projects.
- Analyzes project management plans for complex engineering projects.
- Understands project delivery uncertainties and uses risk management principles to address them.
- Reviews operational procedures for policy and performance compliance.
- Receives administrative supervision with broad objectives and limits.
- Mentors senior staff.
