The Village of Lisle is seeking a Building Official to administer and enforce building codes, conduct plan reviews and inspections, and oversee a variety of permitting and code-related functions. The role works closely with property owners, design professionals, contractors, and residents to interpret code requirements, address inquiries, and resolve project-specific permitting and construction issues.

Essential Functions
  • Plans, coordinates, and enforces the Village’s adopted building codes and ordinances.
  • Participates in the review of new development and redevelopment proposals.
  • Conducts and oversees field inspections on complex or large scope projects. Reviews specifications and engineering calculations to determine compliance with legal requirements of codes, ordinances and accepted engineering practices. Consults with third party professionals as necessary.
  • Directs and administers programs for compliance with municipal codes and regulations governing building construction, housing, zoning, rehabilitation, alteration, use and occupancy of structures within the Village.
  • Monitors changes in codes and legislation, new building materials and construction methods and property maintenance. Provides updated interpretations of codes and regulations to the Development Services Director.
  • Drafts revisions and recommends updates or changes to codes, ordinances and local regulations.
  • Oversees the issuance of “stop work orders” for work started without a permit or not in compliance with approved plans or Village ordinances.
  • Explains, interprets, and provides guidance regarding applicable codes to architects, engineers, contractors, developers, owners/residents and other interested parties. Answers questions regarding building and property maintenance codes, establishes valuations and permit cost for new projects based on codes, regulations and policies.
  • Research problems and complaints regarding commercial and residential buildings, building construction and code compliance. Recommends corrective actions and resolves issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Develops and implements procedures and streamlines processes to enhance operations.
  • Provides direct oversight to Village contractors/consultants, and acts as a resource to staff.
  • Prepares and directs the preparation of a variety of written correspondence, reports, procedures, ordinances and other materials relating to building permits, code enforcement, certificates of occupancy, inspections and violations.

The role requires comprehensive knowledge of municipal code enforcement, building industry practices, and construction methods across structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and related fields. The individual must be able to interpret codes and plans, stay current with industry standards, and effectively represent the Village in community development matters. Strong project management, collaboration, and relationship-building skills are essential, along with the ability to communicate clearly, enforce regulations fairly, and handle sensitive information with professionalism.

The position also requires sound judgment, the ability to remain composed in challenging situations, flexibility to respond to emergencies, and proficiency with relevant software, tools, equipment, and travel to inspection sites.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The position requires regular communication, travel to inspection sites, and the ability to handle materials and operate equipment. It involves a range of physical activities—including climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in various environmental conditions such as noise, temperature extremes, dust, chemicals, and machinery. The role also demands strong visual abilities, sustained periods of standing or sitting, effective decision-making and communication skills, and the capacity to maintain composure in challenging or potentially hazardous situations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience as a residential and commercial plans examiner is required.
  • Associates degree is required. Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction technology, or related field is strongly preferred.
  • International Code Council (ICC) certifications required including:
    Certified Building Official, Building Plans Examiner, Residential Plans Examiner, Commercial Building Inspector, and Residential Combination Inspector (Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing).
  • Ability to successfully complete a post offer physical, drug screening, and background investigation.
Compensation

This position is FLSA exempt with an excellent benefit package, including health and life insurance, IMRF pension, vacation time, paid holidays and sick days. The salary range for this position is $85,704 - $117,844 based on qualifications.
