Lead Substation Protection & Control Engineer

GAI is seeking an experienced Lead Substation Protection & Control Engineer to oversee the design, development, and implementation of protection and control systems for high‑voltage substations. This role serves as a technical leader within the engineering team, ensuring all protection and control designs meet regulatory standards, project requirements, and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities- Lead engineering design and review of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution substations (typically 69kV to 500kV).
- Develop and approve protection schemes including one‑line diagrams, three‑line diagrams, control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Integrate protection and control drawings to interface with the physical layout and design of substations.
- Develop control and relay panel layouts and assemble specifications.
- Develop design specifications, including the overall bill of materials.
- Design and size auxiliary systems (AC/DC load centers, batteries, chargers).
- Design and size conduit, cable, and backup generators.
- Travel to offices, clients, and project sites for meetings, scoping visits, and design reviews.
- Review junior engineer designs, verify compliance with client standards, and identify gaps.
- Document QA/QC reviews and maintain records.
- Lead tasks across multiple projects per GAI’s high standards of project management.
- Applies broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
- Independently evaluates and adapts standard techniques and criteria.
- Leads tasks and projects of moderate complexity.
- Develops plans, specifications, and other project documents.
- Uses engineering economics, probability, and statistics to analyze risk.
6+ Years of Experience
EducationB.S. or M.S. in Engineering
Certification / LicensureProfessional Engineer (P.E.) License
Technical Responsibilities- Design complete projects, systems, components, or processes.
- Prepare complete plans, specifications, and project documents.
- Conduct analyses and interpret test data.
- Develop and review project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
- Assign tasks to technical and non‑technical staff.
- Coordinate detailed aspects of engineering work.
- Prepare scopes, budgets, and schedules.
- Assist in proposals for professional services or funding.
- Receive general direction on key objectives and guidance on complex problems.
- Mentor junior staff and review work products.
- Attend and present at project meetings.
Effective communication with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
