Job Title: Director of Maintenance and Grounds Services

Reports to: Executive Director for Operational Services

Dept.: Operational Services

Exemption Status: Exempt/Professional

Pay Scale: AP4

Calendar: 240

Primary

Purpose:

To assist the Executive Director of Operational Services in short and long-range planning of district facility maintenance/ground and works. Lead team of employees in successfully maintaining the district’s facilities.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Clear and valid Texas driver’s license
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Field Certification in either HVACR, Master Plumber, Master Electrician, Certified Energy Manager, or Facility Management preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years experience in public schools or comparable experience

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Knowledge of basic computer software programs
  • Knowledge of school plant maintenance and custodial operations
  • Ability to conduct on-site inspection of district facilities
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Major

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Ensures that support service operations are supportive of instructional goals and objectives of the district and the attainment of Campus Performance Objectives (Academic Excellence Indicators).
  • Develops and maintains positive staff morale with support service departments.
  • Demonstrates effective communication with staff, community, and Board of Trustees.
  • Ensures that support service staff uses effective communication techniques.
  • Develops long and short-range objectives and goals for the support service of the school district.
  • Focuses the business/facility operations of the school towards accomplishing the district’s mission and attaining stated goals and objectives.
  • Assists with planning and conducting needs assessments of the district.
  • Promotes a positive image that supports the mission of the school district.
  • Works with other personnel in, staffing needs, building and facilities’ needs and usage, energy needs, capital equipment needs, and other items for district and individual school improvement.
  • Has high expectations and high regard for staff supervised and communicates this perspective to subordinates and others.
  • Defines job performance expectations of subordinate staff, evaluates job performance, conducts conferences, and develops training options and/or improvement plans to ensure the best operation of the department.
  • Maintains a professional growth and development program for staff.
  • Provides leadership in management for: maintenance, custodial and grounds
  • Develops and implements cost effective practices throughout the district.
  • Assists the superintendent in overseeing the purchase or sale of school properties.
  • Understands and communicates environmental issues dealing with asbestos, lead, and Texas Hazard Communications Act record keeping.
  • Uses information provided through assessment instruments and the district appraisal process to improve performance.
  • Seeks, accepts and responds to evaluative feedback from line supervisors, utilizing this data to improve performance.
  • Takes the initiative to develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignments.
  • Actively seeks out professional development activities designed to improve performance in identified areas of need.
  • Actively participates in professional organizations; takes the initiative to provide leadership in addressing the challenges facing the profession.
  • Conducts oneself in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Articulates to the general public the school district’s mission and goals and the way(s) in which business operations support these directions.
  • Is involved in community activities that foster rapport and mutual respect between the district and the larger community.
