About the RoleWe are partnering with a fast-growing organization in the energy services sector to hire a detail-oriented Staff Accountant. This role will play a key part in delivering accurate, proactive financial insights to support leadership decision-making and ongoing operational improvement. The ideal candidate is highly organized, skilled in core accounting functions, comfortable engaging across all levels of management, and eager to contribute to a dynamic, project-driven business environment.
Job DescriptionIn this role, you will support financial operations across tax compliance, inventory accounting, month-end close, internal controls, and various state and local filings. Youll work cross-functionally with HR, Legal, and operational teams to ensure accurate reporting and strong compliance practices.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and file sales and use tax returns across multiple states
- Prepare and file new state tax registrations
- Coordinate new state account setup (Secretary of State, Sales & Use Tax) in partnership with HR, Legal, and third-party providers
- Respond to and resolve state sales tax notices
- Maintain updated tax filing calendars
- Complete annual filings, including:
- 1099s
- State property tax and commercial activity filings
- Net profit returns
- Occupational tax returns
- Manage inventory accounting, including reconciliations, variance analysis, COGS analysis, reserves, and counts
- Execute month-end journal entries and reconciliations, including job costing, intercompany allocations, leases, internal commissions, and incentive units
- Perform month-end journal entries for a Canadian entity
- Manage and support local licensing and insurance required for specific projects
- Support finance functions related to fixed assets, prepaids, commissions, insurance, bonding, and board reporting
- Maintain and enhance internal controls to ensure accuracy of financial records
- Identify and recommend technology solutions to improve workflow efficiency
- Support the annual external audit and tax return preparation
- Assist the finance team on an as-needed basis
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Required
- 2+ years of experience in finance or business accounting
- Knowledge of GAAP and standard financial processes
- Intermediate Excel skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with sound judgment
- Excellent communication and presentation abilities, capable of explaining complex concepts clearly
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited institution
- Ability to travel up to 25% within the continental U.S.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive drug screening and background check
- Valid drivers license
Preferred
- Experience working in a services-based business
- Experience managing business insurance, bonds, or external financial platforms
- Exposure to project-based accounting or financial operations within the energy industry
