We're looking for a morning breaking news reporter who relishes the rush of breaking news, especially in Central Arkansas. You’ll be at the forefront of fast-moving stories, interviewing sources, verifying facts, and writing clear, concise briefs on tight deadlines. You’ll also track updates as events unfold, providing our readers with timely, accurate information.

What You'll Do

Chase leads, conducts interviews, and digs for details on fast-developing stories across a range of topics.

Write crisp, accurate briefs that get vital information to readers fast.

Follow up with sources and file updates to keep coverage thorough and reliable—our readers count on it.

Keep an eye on wire services and social platforms for breaking news that affects our region and beyond.

The Ideal Candidate
  • Will seek out new stories and sources
  • Can produce strong copy while covering important stories on tight deadlines

    Can illustrate stories with vivid photos and videos
  • Is comfortable with technology
  • Is focused on the audience
  • Is familiar with Associated Press style and media law

The candidate should have the ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.

This is an on-site position. Candidates must be able to work in the Democrat-Gazette’s downtown Little Rock newsroom 5 a.m.

- 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. Our morning breaking news reporter also works closely with the night breaking news/police reporter and will be cross-trained to handle other tasks on the online team.

A degree in journalism or a related field is desired with at least one (1) year of professional experience in writing news stories. Two (2) years’ experience, preferably at a daily newspaper or television station, may be substituted in lieu of a college degree.
