Position: Teacher 1 - Academy

Overview

Summary:

Instructs individuals served in activities designed to promote social, physical, intellectual and literacy growth. Provides personal care to individuals served by program in a discrete and professional manner. Evaluates individuals using standardized and criterion-based testing materials across five domains (motor, social, cognitive, self-help/adaptive, and communication), including scoring the evaluation and generating a report. A $2,000 sign-on bonus is offered.

Responsibilities
  • Teach in the areas of development: social/emotional, cognitive, motor, language and communication, and self-help. Emphasize learning, literacy and social skills that promote independence and prepare individuals served for transitions through life phases (early childhood, primary school, secondary education, adulthood, independent living).
  • Use appropriate management and modification techniques to manage behavior.
  • Plan and implement weekly lesson plans based on each individual’s needs, considering all aspects of development and goals/objectives in each individual’s treatment/education plan.
  • Follow standard frameworks for classroom setup and curriculum implementation.
  • Evaluate functional level of individuals using screening tools, data collection and assessments; refer for further assessment as needed.
  • Prepare materials and instruction aids to present objectives to individuals or groups using task analysis methods.
  • Keep accurate records and data related to attendance, progress toward instructional goals, guardian contact, medical needs, daily health checks, and incidents.
  • Arrange and supervise meaningful special activities (e.g., classroom events, special guests).
  • Communicate regularly with guardians and program team regarding strengths, needs and identified issues; communicate with supervisor about program or staff concerns.
  • Ensure classroom meets quality standards and state requirements for education and licensure.
  • Collaborate with program team to provide appropriate and individualized programming and modifications for individuals with disabilities (feeding, positioning, communication methods, classroom supports, equipment).
  • Collaborate to align goals across disciplines (education, therapy, behavior, medical, etc.).
  • Plan and direct classroom duties of teaching assistants/paraprofessionals; provide feedback and participate in annual evaluations as applicable.
  • Assist with personal care for individuals served (feeding, diapering/toileting, etc.).
  • Maintain a safe, orderly and clean classroom; uphold hygiene, health and safety for individuals and staff.
  • Attend initial placement, teaming, and annual ITP/IEP meetings; implement team decisions related to development and functional education.

HIPAA While performing duties, comply with all federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to Easterseals Arkansas. Employee has access to client protected health information as defined; access to other PHI requires supervisor or Privacy Officer approval.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises one to three teaching assistants/paraprofessionals in the classroom. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems, in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in education or related field (ABA, Speech-Language, Occupational or Physical Therapy) required with three years teaching experience preferred.

  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of best practices and curriculum for education and development and the role of therapy and related fields in programming and service delivery for each child.
