this position is responsible for the daily review and management of motor fuel tax accounts, including establishing new accounts, monitoring accounts for non-filing, outstanding balances, and account changes, as well as processing amended returns. The position also reviews all motor fuel tax and dyed diesel refund claims monthly to ensure accuracy and compliance before approval.
in addition, this position is responsible for the monthly close-out process, which includes the daily reconciliation of all motor fuel tax revenue deposits and the preparation of comprehensive monthly close-out reports containing statistical and revenue data for dfa management, the arkansas department of transportation (ardot), and other key state individuals/organizations.

job summarythe tax auditor i is an entry-level position responsible for performing routine audits of tax returns and other financial records to ensure compliance with state and federal tax laws and regulations. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with taxpayers and colleagues. The successful candidate will use auditing techniques to evaluate the accuracy of reported tax liabilities and provide recommendations for adjustments or further investigation.
This position requires knowledge of tax laws and auditing principles, and the ability to interpret and apply them effectively within the framework of state regulations.
review and examine tax returns, financial statements, and supporting documentation to ensure accurate reporting of tax obligations. Evaluate taxpayer information for completeness and adherence to state tax laws and regulations.use auditing software and tools to analyze financial data, identifying discrepancies, errors, or potential fraudulent activities. Prepare clear and concise audit reports detailing findings, adjustments, and recommendations.communicate professionally and respectfully with taxpayers to clarify audit findings, answer questions, and resolve discrepancies.
This may involve written correspondence, phone calls, and in-person meetings.assess taxpayer compliance with state tax regulations, identifying under reported taxes, and ensuring all necessary adjustments are made to tax filings in accordance with established guidelines.maintain accurate records of audits, including work papers, correspondence, and findings. Ensure all documentation is compliant with department policies and legal requirements.work closely with other auditors, supervisors, and managers to ensure effective teamwork, share knowledge, and develop best practices for audits and investigations.
