The Registered Nurse provides patient care to assigned patients in the H8 Neuroscience Progressive Care Unit (NPCU). The NPCU is a 30-bed unit specializing in neurological and neurosurgical diagnoses. Neuroscience nursing at UAMS is part of the Critical Care Division. Our nurses receive focused education and competency assessment for common neuroscience concepts, monitoring, procedures, and devices.

Responsibilities include collecting and documenting assessment data, developing a Plan of Care, implementing POC including medical order and interdisciplinary approach, evaluating the progress of patient toward attainment of desired outcomes, providing effective patient/family education/discharge planning, administering medication per standard including drug information to patients/families, acting as a resource/supports others; delivering patient care using the principles of the defined nursing modality, delegating care based on UAMS standards, legal and regulatory requirements, specific job description and individual level of education and training, contributing to a positive work environment that is conducive to clinical education while serving as a resource for student nurses and staff, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include a graduate of an accredited Nursing Program with Associates Degree, Nursing Diploma, Bachelors in Nursing, or Master's in Nursing, valid RN License, one (1) year Registered Nursing experience, excellent communication skills, basic computer skills, and strong work ethics and accountability. Preferred qualifications include national certification, BSN or MSN, 2 or more years of nursing experience, a minimum of 1 year in an acute care setting such as a teaching hospital, and cardiac experience a plus.

Employees in this role must be fitted for, capable of donning and performing routine tasks in personal protective equipment to include N95 masks, Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR) or Controlled Air Purifying Respirators (CAPR).

Physical requirements include constant physical activity such as hearing, reading, concentrating, thinking analytically, frequent physical activity such as standing, walking, talking, using hands to touch, handle or feel, occasional physical activity such as sitting, bending, crawling, crouching, kneeling, stooping, reaching overhead, tasting or smelling, lifting/carrying weight of 100 lbs. or more, pushing/pulling weight of 100 lbs. or more, physical environment inside medical facility environment, noise level moderate, visual requirements near visual acuity, far visual acuity, color discrimination, depth perception, and hazards biological, chemical, sharp objects/tools, dust, fumes/gases/odors.
