job summary

the chemist ii performs advanced chemical analyses in a laboratory setting to support state programs in public health, environmental quality, law enforcement, or regulatory compliance. This role requires a strong foundation in analytical techniques, strict adherence to quality control, and the ability to interpret and report complex scientific data.

primary responsibilities

conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses using techniques such as gas chromatography (gc), high-performance liquid chromatography (hplc), mass spectrometry (ms), atomic absorption, spectrophotometry, and wet chemistry methods. Prepare and analyze environmental, biological, forensic, or industrial samples based on the agency’s mission. Interpret test results and ensure accuracy through rigorous quality control procedures. Record and analyze scientific data, prepare lab reports, and ensure findings comply with state and federal standards.

Assist in compiling data for public records, legal proceedings, or regulatory reports. Maintain laboratory notebooks, databases, and electronic systems with attention to detail and compliance. Assist with audits, inspections, and certification reviews from agencies. Participate in internal and external proficiency testing programs. Provide guidance to chemist i and technician-level staff in methods, equipment usage, and safety procedures. Collaborate with other divisions, departments, and partner agencies on interagency investigations and special projects.

minimum qualifications

at least three years of experience in chemistry, chemical testing, laboratory testing, or a related field.
