Overview
The Uncertainty Meteorologist (Senior) assesses weather‑driven operational risk for SPP's Balancing Authority, translating meteorological insight into clear, actionable guidance for real‑time, intra‑day, day‑ahead, and forward‑looking horizons. The role combines numerical weather prediction, observations, and historical impact analysis with system operations requirements to inform resource adequacy decisions and risk mitigation. The position partners closely with System Operations and Coordinated Operations to enhance situational awareness, guide commitment strategies, and support reliable grid operations.
Core Responsibilities
- Quantifies weather‑driven operational risk by integrating numerical weather prediction, observations, and historical impacts to provide clear risk signals across real‑time, intra‑day, day‑ahead, and forward‑looking horizons for System Operations.
- Produces commitment guidance by analyzing market assessments of available capacity and generation resources to inform actions that maintain adequate resource availability and reliable BA operations.
- Delivers uncertainty briefings and decision support to System Operations and Coordinated Operations so leaders and operators can proactively manage reliability under forecast uncertainty.
- Executes end‑to‑end risk assessments (data sourcing, validation, modeling, and interpretation) to enable timely, defensible operational decisions in current‑day and next‑day time frames.
- Evaluates and recommends tariff/market rule improvements related to forecasting, data, or uncertainty treatment to strengthen adequacy practices and reliability outcomes.
- Conducts after‑action reviews comparing predicted vs. realized outcomes to identify drivers, benchmark performance, and implement process improvements in collaboration with Operations.
- Train and advise operators on weather‑uncertainty concepts and tools to build capability and consistency in uncertainty‑aware decision‑making.
- Collaborates on special operational initiatives (e.g., coordinated operations projects or targeted studies) to address emerging risks and improve cross‑team readiness.
